Just what it says. FCP3 did not come with an MPEG-2 encoder. If you’re trying to make MPEG-2 for use with DVD Studio Pro you have to either have DVDSP, and run it to initialize the application, or a third party MPEG-2 encoder like BitVice or Compression Master.

I have to disagree with you. Motion like FCP also has no exponential scaling and does not handle large scale motion control with scale and position very well either. For those kinds of motion it is just as clunky, with as poorly controlled a motion path as FCP.

If you’re doing a straight line motion you don’t have to pull anything. If you add easing, acceleration and deceleration is automatically added, and it’s a pretty significant ease, unless the motion in time and space is very short. If you want to increase the values pull the inner button on the handle, not the outer one. It will not move the Bezier handle from the straight line.

Use a light complementary color, pale magenta against green perhaps, set off with a dark edge or drop shadow. Make the point size at least 30 with a block sanserif font.

You have to set easing for center animation in the Canvas. Smoothing only applies to keyframes in keyframe graphs, and you can apply it to scale, rotation, crop, distort, time remapping, filters, etc. There should be no float effect on a simple move if done properly.

Two problems occur, one when you have to make a very large move. This is because scale and center animation work in different ways and have different motion rates, one is linear, the other is logarithmic, and because there is no exponential scaling in FCP to compensate for this. The other problem occurs when you need to make an animation ease into a move, ease out of a move to a stop, hold, and then ease into another move. This cannot be done in FCP properly because of the way the software has been implemented. It’s been a failure of motion control in FCP since v1, and that something so basic to good motion control has still not been improved in v5 is pretty poor, but that’s for another day and another discussion.

There are third party solutions to do good, complex motion control. CGM online has a roll/scroll title filter (which was at one time incorporated into FCP in v3 but subsequently removed, another unfortunate development in the “progress” of FCP). You can do good smooth motions as described above with this tool. Lyric software has Pan/Zoom Pro which works well as a plugin to FCP and also gives good motion control. A standalone product called Moving Picture also works very well.

If the material is being captured and is appearing as 29.97, it sounds as you used the wrong pulldown and the tape was not really shot in advanced but in 24p normal.

No. I was running CS2 and FCP5.1 on a MacBookPro all last week without problems. I can’t speak to the Macromedia software, but I have seen no problem with the Adobe products (though I guess it’s all Adobe now).
