There is no reason to break apart the clip in what you’re doing. If you do need to manipulate the audio track separately from the video, expand it or detach it. Break apart is really only if you have multiple tracks that you need to use independently from each other, or for compound clips or storylines you want to separate.

You could manufacture one the old fashioned way by duplicating the layer, darkening it, blurring it, offsetting it; but I think Brendan Gibbons has made a free effect that will do this. If you search for him on this forum or search the effects at fcp.co you should find it.

If you’re sure the file was correct, open the exported file in the QT player and look at the movie inspector. That will tell you which is the correct file.

Everybody I think would like the timeline to scroll. Everybody would have liked the timeline to scroll since version 1 of FCP. It never made it into v7. Hopefully we won’t have to wait as long for it to make it into FCPX.

Click the meter in the dashboard to open the background tasks HUD. You can pause or cancel tasks there.

It benefits Apple to have two tiers of products. iPhoto/Aperture. iMovie/FCP. GarageBand/Logic, especially when the first tier are primarily free apps. The higher end apps are revenue streams. FCP has been number two on top grossing apps for a long time, second only to Lion, and Logic is now third.
