Double click the clip to load it into the viewer.
Better?

Here is the conservative advice for DV, HDV:
1. Buy an PCIe expansion card to add FW ports. Or even better eSATA ports.
2. Buy a drive with RAID 3 or 5 data protection, like the LaCie Quadra or G-Speed.
3. Plug this drive into your PCIe expansion card.
This set up will take you up to DVCPro HD and if you go with eSATA and buy a serious drive you will be prepared to dabble with higher end formats

Sam:
Keep your media on a drive other than the boot drive. Your boot drive will run the applications and the OS. The other drive will push the media.
If your media resides on the boot drive it will work

Huge subject. Here are some links:

Research and test before you start to shoot.

My suggestion is to buy a ExpressCard like this one:
https://www.powermax.com/parts/show/n29504?src=g
to add a FW port to your MacBook Pro for capturing.
Or buy a six pin to eight pin firewire cable like this one.

The first option is more robust, as the camera and the deck will be on different buses.

December 28, 2007 at 9:37 am in reply to: Mastering 720P to BetaSP, running time out of syncI know you are savy to the drop, non-drop thing, but see if this is makes sense.
If your time line is non-drop your actual program length would be longer than reported by the code.
So if your master tape is drop frame, you would be going long by one second twenty-four frames for every thirty minutes.
As I say, I know you understand these issues from your post, but I’ve had more than one DOH! moment in my career

Where did the clips originate?
Certain flavors of mpeg as well as iMovie files “mux” the audio signal

Dave,
Unless you need the extra functionality of the Kona 3, consider the Kona LHe.
Here is the comparison page:

The Canopus analog to digital (DV) converter products are typically used to capture analog signals and to view the output of your time line to video and audio monitors.
However, not all codecs are supported for firewire previews.
You mention P2. You need to look into something a product like the Matrox MXO if you want to output HD to external monitoring.
A review of the MXO:

Three notes if you are working primarily in DV:
1. Your camera can be used to preview the output of the time line to video and audio monitors. It is a convenience and wear and tear issue
