I just started my first FCP project after watching a podcast on setting up and capturing footage. My question is that my MacBook Pro port that connects to my external hd is the same and only port to capture footage from my HVX. Do I save directly to my desktop my audio/render/scratch disk files then transfer to my hd?

My suggestion is to buy a ExpressCard like this one:

to add a FW port to your MacBook Pro for capturing.

Or buy a six pin to eight pin firewire cable like this one.

The first option is more robust, as the camera and the deck will be on different buses.

u need to buy an extrenal hardrive with 800 firewire, u are using the firewire 400 for your camera , then u can have both firewires working at the same time 400 for the cam and 800 for the hd (which is better anyway for the hd 400 fw is just a little faster than usb)
