Are both of the machines in the same facility? If so, just output from FCP via HDSDI directly into the AVID system assuming that both systems have I/O abilities. SDSDI would work all right as well and since it’s just going to BetaSP even YUV would probably look OK. It’s just a thought…and it’s real time to boot.

Check around and see if you can find the chassis mount versions. They aren’t as pretty as the triax bullets but they will still work the same. I needed a few of the adapters a while ago and of course they weren’t available. I found a supplier that stocked the bulkhead-type adapters and they worked perfectly. They are designed to be mounted to a cutout panel on a rack to hold the adapter in place with the backside having the triax mount and the front side having the BNC mount. Actually cheaper than the bullets as well.

It means that the frame you are parked on has not rendered itself yet for playback.
If you have a lot of filters or effects on a frame it will take a second or two to render itself when you park the playhead on that frame. Once the circle goes away, the frame is showing a fully rendered scene.

October 4, 2007 at 2:33 pm in reply to: Multiclip question

After thinking a bit on this, I just went to Modify>Timecode and subtracted the offset for each clip from the hand held camera then created the multiclip and used Timecode as the reference!
Seems to work fine. Everything’s synced up correctly now.YaY!
    Thanks again!

I’ve found that a small amount of Gaussian blur or a vertical blur will often take the edge off of a still with excess resolution. Try different amounts until you find the right setting for a particular still.

October 1, 2007 at 10:16 pm in reply to: Rendered transitions “jump” in HD timeline

    Hi Peter.
I checked the converted files in the browser info and the field dominance is coming up as “none”.
These were shot at 24fps progressive. Even when converted, if they are progressive would they even have a field dominance?
Guess I’m a little confused with all of the conversions these clips have been through today.
The sequence preset is DVCPro 1080 @ 23.98fps. In the preset info window, the field dominance is grayed out for this preset. Is this how FCP shows a progressive timeline?
    Whew!
Tired but still kickin’ this thing around. Long day…

October 1, 2007 at 7:24 pm in reply to: Kona 3 won’t let me down convert analog output?

    Hi David.
Thanks for the tip. I forgot all about Cinema Tools!
Since I only had around 40 clips, I simply converted them from 24fps to 23.98. It tool only a few seconds.
After relinking to the new media and pasting a copy of the sequence into a 23.98 timeline and removing the “distort” value that appeared, all is now well.
I set the Kona to 23.98, the down convert options came alive and all is well in the world.
…and the shooter will no longer shoot at 24fps!
    Thanks again,
    Tom

In the past, the shooter did shoot at a frame rate of 23.98fps. I had no problems with the video whatsoever. However, this footage shot at 24fps is proving to be a real bugger. Just about all of my optiond for getting this spot out into the real world thru the Kona 3 board are grayed out at this point.
My drivers for the Kona 3 board are v3.2. I’m running FCP 5.1.4 on a Quad G5. It would appear that the V4.0 drivers for the Kona are for FCP 6 only.(?)
I’m wondering if there might even be some different codec I can recapture this footage at and reedit the spot?

I’m looking for options right now on just how to get this thing out to SD Digibeta for air.
I will contact the fine folks at AJA as well on this one.
    Thanks,
    Tom

September 26, 2007 at 3:27 pm in reply to: experience with USB-232 remote leads?

If what you are referring to is deck control via the computer, Keyspan makes a USB product called the Twinspan that will enable you to control your deck via USB. The deck that you refer to used RS-422 protocol for control by the way. Not RS-232. There is a big difference between the two. Additionally, if you do not have any kind of a card for outputting from your computer, you will need some way to get the signal into that deck. Are you planning on going in thru Firewire? If that’s the case, why not just use the Firewire protocol to control the deck as well as transfer the video. I also notice that this deck is described as able to preform insert editing only when under RS-422 control and ONLY when using the SD DVCam mode. It doesn’t look like it is capable of insert editing while in the HDV mode.
You might want to do a bit more fact-finding before committing to this combination. There may be more to this than you realize.
