I’ve got a feature film cut on FCP Studio in DVCPro HD 720p, 24p. I need to get this project onto BetaSP via an Avid Media Composer.

I’ve never had a professional capture card, and didn’t need one for this project considering our HD footage was imported directly into FCP via P2.

To get my project from an Apple running FCP to a PC running Media Composer would I simply need to export a full-res Quicktime from FCP and import into Avid?

Seems to me this would work fine considering both systems are up-to-date and HD compliant. But has anyone ever tried something like this with production quality results?

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, it’ll work. You might just want to export the film as a DV-25 or 50 file from Final Cut. No matter what you do, the Avid will want to convert your media into that “special” Avid version of the same codec… so lot’s of sitting around and waiting for it to import. And since you’re going to beta SP, no tremendous reason to feed the Avid HD files.

Issue #1 – DVCPRO HD quicktimes imported into FCP are NOT readable on ANY computer that doesn’t have FCP installed. SO exporting a self contained full res movie isn’t an option. Either is DV50, that is DVCPRO 50 and again, only readable on machines with FCP. Animation would be a good choice, but the file sizes are HUGE. You can also try uncompressed 8-bit SD.

But, if I were you, I’d rent a DVCPRO HD deck for a day, output to that, and get it dubbed. No reason to go to an Avid. That is over complicating matters.

Are both of the machines in the same facility? If so, just output from FCP via HDSDI directly into the AVID system assuming that both systems have I/O abilities. SDSDI would work all right as well and since it’s just going to BetaSP even YUV would probably look OK. It’s just a thought…and it’s real time to boot.
