  • experience with USB-232 remote leads?

We are thinking of purchasing a remote lead so that we can insert edit to DV-CAM if need be. We do not have a capture card, but were thinking of a USB alternative. An editor here says he has used one with an Avid and it worked fine, was wondering if anyone could say that it works fine with FCP? the deck will most likely be a Sony HVR-1500.

If what you are referring to is deck control via the computer, Keyspan makes a USB product called the Twinspan that will enable you to control your deck via USB. The deck that you refer to used RS-422 protocol for control by the way. Not RS-232. There is a big difference between the two. Additionally, if you do not have any kind of a card for outputting from your computer, you will need some way to get the signal into that deck. Are you planning on going in thru Firewire? If that’s the case, why not just use the Firewire protocol to control the deck as well as transfer the video. I also notice that this deck is described as able to preform insert editing only when under RS-422 control and ONLY when using the SD DVCam mode. It doesn’t look like it is capable of insert editing while in the HDV mode.
You might want to do a bit more fact-finding before committing to this combination. There may be more to this than you realize.

    Thanks for your reply Tom.
The Keyspan twin serial adapter seems to be the lead to use, however looking into this I see it has Mini DIN8 ports where as the HVR-1500 has a DB9 port. I’ve looked into some sort of connector to join the two but have found no sign of such a cable unless I make it myself… any suggestions?

This is all for the cause of being able to insert edit, as using just firewire does not enable us to do so.

    cheers
