Update:
I reinstalled the mpeg Quicktime Component from my original Final Cut Studio 3 disk installer and I now have video play back in Quicktime player 7.6 but no audio with mpeg files. This seems to be a common problem going from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Since it took me this long to up grade this system, surely this problem has veen worked out?

I’ve had issues where certain filters won’t render in a 10bit ProRes timeline. Is your time ProRes or DVCPro? In either case, try going to your sequence settings and set it to 8-bit rather than 10bit and give it another try. I had the same issue you are seeing a few months ago and that fixed it. It was a Boris effect that didn’t play well on by system at 10-bit.

What Quicktime formats are you recording? If you are recording DV50 or DVCProHD, do you have the codecs to play back those files on your PC? Those codecs were always included with Final Cut on a Mac, but often aren’t on most PC setups.

Make sure your track size is not the smallest. Try displaying a larger track size in your timeline.

Found the issue. I thought I had installed the AVC-Intra Quicktime component. I hadn’t. A quick download and install of the component fixed the playback issues. Pilot error on this one.

Panasonic card readers have always been ridiculously expensive. No technical reason for it either. You’d think that a simple USB card reader would be much more reasonably priced? I use a small USB hard drive to offload directly from the camera in the field or just use my HPX-370 itself to offload to the archive drives on the editing computer.

I doubt very much that the hospital will allow any gear to be placed directly over any surgical area. There is a sterile zone around the operating area that must be respected and kept clean. Field cameras and gear aren’t exactly sterile. I’ve shot a number of surgical procedures and have never actually positioned a camera directly over the operating area. There is too much risk of infection from anything falling into the sterile area. Not to mention what would happen when that sandbag slips off of the C-stand. Unhappy surgeons are not fun to deal with. Insurance companies even less so. Any surgery is very serious and most if not all medical facilities are not going to risk the chance of infection or an accident in the operating theater. It would be best to discuss your plans with the folks in charge at the facility before making any further plans.

I’ve been using a 4Tb G-Speed es in a RAID5 configuration for a half hour show I’ve been editing for two years now. The show is 720p, AVCIntra format. I’ve had no issues at all. Plenty fast enough for general editing. I can get a season of the show (16 episodes) on the RAID. After that, I archive everything to removable drives, put them on the shelf and start a new season on the G Speed. I run an eSATA card in my MacPro.
