How is the RAID set up? RAID 0? RAID5? RAID10?
Usually if it’s RAID 5 or 10, it takes a different utility than the basic Apple Drive Utility to format the drives correctly for redundancy. Did you check with the manufacturer on their procedure to format the RAID? I have several RAID5 G-SPEEDes units and I format them with the G-Tech supplied drive utility software to create a RAID5 array and not the normal Drive Utility provided by Apple.

You could also switch to the wireframe mode before doing the repo. It shouldn’t bog your system down at all then.

Which version of FCP are you trying to install? I don’t think you can install FCP version 6 or higher on a G5 computer. The G5 has IBM Power PC processors and the newer machines run in Intel chips.

Unless the film is negative rather than positive stock. If it’s negative, you can sometimes pull some details (and a lot of grain) out of the dense areas of the film. Some detail might still there. It’s just blocked up by the density of the highlights on the film.

You could breaking the handles on the keyframe and adjusting them separately.

What are your sequence settings? A timeline set for 10 bit resolution will look better on darker areas than an 8-bit setting. Maybe your computer’s DVI output is sending 8-bit information to your monitor while the Blu-Ray player is outputting 10-bit? A 10-bit signal will have a much better gray scale resolution and will have many more bits to “describe” your video. When that video gets darker, 8-bit will have less information to describe your video than 10-bit. You can also see the same problem in a shaded dark blue sky. The 10-bit video will look smooth while the 8-bit version will show bands in the shading.

What is the bit depth of the files?

Set your Canvas setting to 100% to see both fields of each frame. You might possibly have a clip where you have a “leftover” field on a clip but you aren’t seeing it unless the canvas is set to 100%. Otherwise, you coould try deleting your render files and re-rendering the project. Where are you seeing the extra frame? In FCP or when playing back on an external monitor?
Uncompressed 10bit should be available as an option in compressor or even in Export via Quicktime directly from FCP.
