I am not sure where is the best place to ask for advice.

I have a video conversion of an old 8mm filmstrip. The film is overexposed. I have FCP X, FCP 3 studio and Adobe CS6 production premium. Is there any thing I can do to improver this video. I’ve adjusted levels and curves so far with limited success. What else could I do?

The video is not available yet as I post. Still being processed.

Not much you can do. When images are over exposed, especially on film, the detail isn’t there to recover. It’s washed out, detail is gone. In film terms, the emulsion is all washed away, and if you look at the film frame with your eye, you’ll see that it is clear, no detail.

You can’t recover what isn’t there. There are limits.

Thanks, I was afraid of that but I thought I would ask of someone more experienced than I.

Unless the film is negative rather than positive stock. If it’s negative, you can sometimes pull some details (and a lot of grain) out of the dense areas of the film. Some detail might still there. It’s just blocked up by the density of the highlights on the film.
