RAID troubles; erased, won’t behave now.
I used disk utility to erase my RAID drive as part of an overall system clean-up. Took 3 days to zero it out over the holiday weekend. Now Disk Utility sees the RAID is connected but can’t format it, says
POSIX REPORTS: THE OPERATION COULDN’T BE COMPLETED. CANNOT ALLOCATE MEMORY.
No drive icon appears on the desktop either… but disk utility CAN see it there. It just refuses to be partitioned, or set up in any way.

In DiskUtility, select the volume inside the disk and click the blue link (down in the window) “Mounting Point”.

“Mount” is grayed out from the top menu.

What sort of Raid is it? How many harddisks? What controller?

4-bay, 3 T Promise Raid enclosure. Only one partition.

We’re trying something else now: erasing each of the 4, 1-T drives in an external dock, one at a time, D.U. says 6 hours apiece to write zeros across them. Guess I can take a LONG lunch today.

I would swop the drives. Put the drives into other places within the raid. Zero-ing doesn’t help.

Tried swapping drives around already, no difference.

You can format the drives as single volumes and then put them back into the raid.
