We all “know” that upgrading FCP in the middle of a project is a “no no”. However, there are times it can’t easily be avoided. I have several, on-going clients that do spots each week for air. I usually use the same project for producing the new spots since it has all of the elements that I need. These are price/item type spots. I’ve been doing spots for one of my clients since version 1.25. I do, update the project and clean out outdated materials, but it’s difficult to avoid some overlap when upgrading software or computers. I’d imagine many TV stations that use FCP for daily promos would be in the same boat as well.
But, so far, so good on my end. I bought a new computer this time around (retiring the trusty old 1Ghz DP) and everything had been installed fresh and squeaky clean. I am, however, about to begin to bring over projects from the old computer. We’ll see how this goes in the next few days. Other than a bad stick of RAM and MANY attempts to get a good replacement, the change over has gone without a hitch.

Also make sure that your timeline is actually DV25. If it’s another format, DV50, uncompressed or whatever, it will act exactlly the way you describe it and won’t output thru Firewire to a DV format camcorder.
Check the settings for your sequence.

OK, you are in Log & Capture. You shuttle the tape to you want to start capturing. You set an “In” point. I usually just hit the “I” key. You then shuttle to the point where you want to stop capturing and set an “Out” point. I hit the “O” key. Then log the clip for batch capture later or just hit the “clip” button to start the capture process for that particular clip.
Never had any problems doing it this way. Hmmm…
I’m not sure what you’re trying to do with the markers…

Bring in your footage with Log & Capture audio set to “Ch1 + Ch2”, edit to timeline as usual. Make sure you don’t pan your audio tracks to center. Leave them panned left & right. Output back to tape as usual.
This is assuming that you can feed to split track from the Beta to whatever you use for input to your computer. You should be able to go right inyto your DeckLink card. If you go thru a mixer, make sure that your channels are discreet and not mixed together

Interesting observation. I just went from a dual 1Ghz running 4.5 to a dual 2.3Ghz running 5.0. When rendering, I expected to see a big jump in speed, but it didn’t really seem much faster than the old computer. Maybe it’s not a fair comparison since the G5 blew out during the test. Froze up and wouldn’t reboot. It’s dead and in the shop right now as a matter of fact. Possibly something was in the process of going wrong from the start and it wasn’t performing at it’s best. I guess I’ll see when it comes back.

Well, it’s an easy solution to the problem, no doubt. And easy to do as well. I guess sometimes, the most practical isn’t the most obvious. I’ve just spent too damn many years DA-ing everything. Splitting the signal…well, that’s just not proper…is it?

What I really should do is to put the Tek scope on the output of the mixer for an accurate level on what’s going to my BetaSp deck. It’s got a +4db XLR output so the same principal of splitting should apply, I’d guess.

-I have done this, but in this case, there are 8 tracks to the audio portion. I can duplicate them and assign them to outputs 3/4, but It’s a cumbersome solution at best. I have an IO that goes to a Digibeta as well and it seems to send a dual stereo signal to the deck thru the SDI output. I was hoping there was a similar solution for the analog LA as well.

I have a model DVDRHD04 stand-alone DVD burner. It has the Ilo brand name but is made by Liteon. Although it has a Firewire input, I cannot get it to recognize the FW output from FCP either. Too bad too. I bought it just for that purpose. I wanted to burn a DVD right from the timelne rather than going thru compressor or StudioPro. Sometimes I just need a quick DVD for client approval and I don’t want to go thru all the trouble of encoding it in the computer. I’m going to get around the problem by using my old, unused Canopus ADVC-100 Firewire converter straight from the computer and into the DVD burner via it’s S-input. Should still look reasonably good that way. This deck also had a hard drive built into it. I’m hoping to be able to output from the computer right to the hard drive and then burn the DVD from that thus freeing up the computer for other work.
We’ll see how it works.

Try making your timeline tracks bigger. (wider/taller) The waveforms don’t show up when the timeline is set to the smallest tracks. Go to a larger size and spread them out for detail. They should appear then.
