Is it me?? I just bought(with great anticipation) my new dual 2.7 g5,2 gigs of ram, osx.4.1
    Installed tiger, upgraded,
new fcp studio install. Now , my last mac was a dual 1 gig. I work mainly in dv, and i am so disappointed thus far, that i’m hoping i’m missing something.
    some observations:
the disk tray for the dual layer drive seems so flimsy that it should be on a childs toy. What kind of crap design is that?
Fans seem too be too loud. changed processor settings to highest, but it still whirrs up when i’m doing anything somewhat demanding. heard raves about how quiet it was??
fcp 5 is not crisp. Again, I’m working on fairly simple compositing with no noticable speed upgradefrom my last mac. in fact, it seems sluggish when rendering
Any thoughts appreciated. apple care is closed today, so i can’t bitch to them.

Interesting observations, just got my new G5 2.7 a week ago. Noticing the same things. A rather flimsy DVD carriage, and the ever-present whirling of the cooling system at the slightest adjustments on the timeline. Granted, I’m new to Apple, so this may be the norm, I dunno. No big problems thus far though. Looking for answers to some little things (see my earlier post about playhead sync). Still getting used to the G5 and FCP (Apple convert), so it’s early yet. After paying $5,000 for this box, it had better perform.

Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz
    4 GB DDR SDRAM
    2 x 400GB Serial ATA
    Superdrive
    Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL
    AJA Kona LS
    OS X 10.4 Tiger
    FCP HD 4.5
    DVD Studio Pro 3.0.0
    Motion 1.0

What do you mean FCP5 is not crisp?

What are you using for scratch disks?

What exactly are you rendering that is ‘sluggish’?

FCP 4.5, using external firewire drives on my dual 1 gig g4, was very responsive. I work primarily in dv, so when i would composite livetype over a track, i would highlight and render selection, and it would knock it out fairly quick. Now, with fcp 5 and my dual g5 2.7, i highlight, render selections, then it seems to “search” for 2 or 3 seconds then writes to video at seemingly the same rate as before. That’s what i mean by not “crisp”
The g5 “whirs”up when i scrub over the livetype clip- and i stopped using”dynamic” settings because its just stuttering. so, i guess i didn’t expect that level of performance from such a powerful machine. I’m hoping its some tiger setting or fcp5 setting that i’m missing.

Interesting observation. I just went from a dual 1Ghz running 4.5 to a dual 2.3Ghz running 5.0. When rendering, I expected to see a big jump in speed, but it didn’t really seem much faster than the old computer. Maybe it’s not a fair comparison since the G5 blew out during the test. Froze up and wouldn’t reboot. It’s dead and in the shop right now as a matter of fact. Possibly something was in the process of going wrong from the start and it wasn’t performing at it’s best. I guess I’ll see when it comes back.
    *Sigh…*
