I had a similar problem whrn I upgraded to FCP 5. Rather than trashing the preferences for FCP, try trashing the preferences for Live Type. After I did this, older projects relinked worked OK in FCP 5.

Just a shot in the dark. When I moved my IO from an older machine to my new G5, it didn’t work worth a darn. After downloading new firmware and drivers from AJA, all is now well. I seen to remember having the green screen problem as well. It’s been solid as a rock after updating the Io software.

I agree. The UVW-1800 is fully capable of insert edits. You have to use an external edit controller or a computer interface since there are no controls on thr front panel, but it will edit just fine. Chris, make sure that you have the audio and video tracks enabled when you try to insert edit. You can do this at the bottom right side of the ETT window. Just click the appropriate tracks you’d like to record on before doing the edit. If none of the tracks are enabled, I believe that ETT will go thru all the motions yet not record anything on the tape. I could be wrong and FCP might give you an error message, but it could account for the fact that it seems to edit yet there isn’t anything on the tape afterwards.

If you’re using an AJA for capture and the video seems to be causing problems, try feeding the AJA with a stable video source, such as black burst into the composite inputs rather than the component output from the beta deck. Then just capture the audio portion as you normally would. If the timecode or the control track is messed up on the Betacam tape, try using capture now and uncontrollable device settings.

Loud in what way? Is it just running fast or is it making some other noise like squeeling or vibrating? Actually there are several fans in the G5. Can you determine which fan it is or is it all of them. If it’s just one, I’d guess you have a fan bearing going south. If it’s all of them, you may have a problem with software or a temperature sensor inside the case.

Also, aside from the bit-depth, Digibeta uses slightly lower compression, 2-1 as opposed to DVC50 which is about 3-1.
I’ve been using DVC50 for editing the past year or so. It’s a good compromise between quality and storage.

Maybe we should just try to “invent” camera persons that know how to shoot an event like it was live and thus eleminate the swish-pan problem at the source…

My guess is that you have an audio phase problem somewhere. One of the channels is 180 degrees out of phase with the other channel. When you mix both channels together, they will cancel each other out. Even if the channels aren’t exact, which is what it sounds like in your case, there will still be cancellation problems. You didn’t say just where and how you are monitoring your audio, but look for an improperly wired connector either on the input or on the output to the computer or mixer if you are using one. The problem could have even been recorded that way in the field with a reversed connector somewhere. Double check all your wiring and I’ll bet you’ll find your problem.

I agree and don’t get me wrong. The new machines are running well and everyone seems to be happy. I’m still running a 1.25DP and FCP 4.5 in one room and it’s booked most of the time. In most cases, it still comes down to the editors. If they imagine it and they want it, they’ll just wait a bit longer for it.
It’s just the principal of it, that’s all.

The new G5’s…
Part of me wants to say “Wow! Too cool”
However, another part of me (the part on my backside nearest where I carry my wallet & checkbook) wants to say “Oh, that’s just great…”I’d be looking at the new machines from a different perspective if it weren’t for the fact that just I replaced all the old G4’s less than 6 months ago. And those G5’s were the newest, just on the market machines.
This just isn’t right…things shouldn’t go obsolete in less than 6 months.
