Hi- I was on vacation for 2 weeks and my G5 1.8 Dual processor was turned off the whole time. When I booted up after returning, the fan was extremely loud and continues to be loud 5 days later. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a warning of fan about to die?

any advice and insight would be greatly appreciated.
I have an important project I need to turn around fast and am worried about the health of the G5.
    thanks!

Go to your system prefs and then Enrgy Saver/Options/Processor Performace. Make sure it’s set to ‘automatic’ and not ‘highest’. It may have been changed by unseen software gremlins who infiltrated your computer room while you were off enjoying yourself for 2 whole weeks.

Sorry, I’m out of ideas. Someone else may respond, though. You could do a search of the posts here. I seem to recall that this very problem has reared its ugly little head before.

Loud in what way? Is it just running fast or is it making some other noise like squeeling or vibrating? Actually there are several fans in the G5. Can you determine which fan it is or is it all of them. If it’s just one, I’d guess you have a fan bearing going south. If it’s all of them, you may have a problem with software or a temperature sensor inside the case.

This is a long shot, but:

Make sure the CPU side panel is properly seated. Even better, remove the panel and make sure the clear plastic shroud behind is properly seated. If it’s not, the G5 will think the cover is off and run the fans at full whack.

    All the best,

no squeeling or vibrating..it is smooth sounding, but the volume of one fan (seems to be the one u can see thru front of cpu)..is definetly much louder than normal…i’ll try the reseating of side panel and plastic shroud..but the computer hasn’t been moved in at least 7 months when i put in my SATA drive!!!??

thanks to all.so far so good.
