I’m glad apple let out a “Download 30day trial” of FCPX, it convinced me that FCPX is not that good.
I’m switching platforms later, but will stay with FCP7 for as long as the apple OS allows me, No doubt apple will work on that issue.

    Cheers

    I have next to my 3ghz Macpro a Windows box with an i7 processor,and efi-x usb switch,(https://asem.com.tw/en)
it performs just as fast as the Macpro,at half the set up costs, but i prefer the mac after many years of Editing etc.

January 7, 2011 at 1:44 am in reply to: which Macbookpro for FCP basic field editing

    Hi Guys ,

Thanks for the info, very useful stuff, i’ll look into it shortly.
encode speed of my 08 Macpro 8core is great, from FCP timeline a 1min clip to H.264 SD PAL one pass 720×576 QT takes about 40 secs, Two pass takes 2min20sec.

I don’t expect a lappy to achieve that kind of speed, I currently use an old Powerbook G4 1.67mhz (because it has P2 PC card slot). it takes over14mins to encode the same 1min clip, That’s Too slow.
I’d like to get the encode rate improved but not invest so many $’s on a platform that will only have limited field use. if it was my only set-up yep, i’d get the latest n greatest, but it’s just a portable editor.

    Cheers for the advice.

    Hi Zac,

if your the only one with vision, think of a ridiculous figure , then double it, put it to them, they will offer much less if their interested and meet half way.
In my experience, it has to be world shattering to achieve a premium figure, if it just a flood, wind, storm etc, it,s just another yarn.
get what you can and spend the proceeds wisely,
    and demand a “credit”.

    goodluck.

July 29, 2010 at 12:42 am in reply to: Incompatible P2 Card… next step?

    Hello William,

I have a HPX172 as a back-up for my now older and still much used P2 cam the SPX800, I prefer to use the bigger cam against the HPX172 because of ease of use, the smaller cams still have too many fiddly buttons and confusing ways of using the controls compared to the Full size cams.
HPX172 biggest advantage is that it is so light weight and can shoot in so many great formats.
I suppose it’s a personal choice thing, my ergonomic dream camera would be one of the new JVC range of shoulder mount cams, if it shot all the formats that the Panasonic did, I’d buy one tomorrow.
Till then I’ll be happy with the 800 and the little HPX.

Cheers and good luck with your repair quote.

    Hi William,

Maybe you’d be better to Sink any repair costs into another camera, and sell your current one, I suspect that since jan 07 it has paid for it’s self many times over.
My last three cameras at any hint of big trouble usually after a few years, I retire them or sell em, and up-date, cards and all…
My experiences of years ago with service by suppliers is woeful and by up-dateing can aviod many expensive and time wasting weeks.

    Cheers

March 19, 2010 at 11:54 pm in reply to: I got my Sonnet QIO Card Reader

Sounds to me like that’s the best the QIO will do, Still if it works it’s an improvement on what’s out there for the price, But for us poor cousins here downunder, the cost of the Qio compared to say a cheap windows laptop is a no brainer.
Still it will fit nice into many facilities because of the variant of cards it can read, and when/if P2 evolves into something else it will be all academic anyway.

I’m surprised that Sonnett has not had some independant transfer tests done with the QIO, it would put many out of their misery and perhaps lead to sales ?.
