    Hio,

Yes i have read most threads on this subject, I respect all who say the top of the range is the go.
But, I just want a lappy that can do Basic Field editing with FCP and fastest possible encoding to H264 movies, with keeping purchase costs to a minimum.
so which of the current range would be right for this. any advice is welcome.
PS, I have a 08 Macpro 8core for studio use, so main edits are done on that.

    Cheers

    Hi Tom,
The cheapest solution, I think, would be a 13″ MBP, then adding one of those USB H264 converters like El Gato turbo (99 US$) or similar.

If you want faster H264 encoding you need the fastest processor or a dedicated H264 encoder. There is no getting around that. Like you said all the info is out there, you just need to make the decision. But if you really need speed the answer is the 17″ with a Matrox with a box with MAX (their H264 encoder). If you cannot afford that, then get what you can and understand encoding will take longer. There is a USB device TurboH264 that would help on any system and it is only about $150 or so.

    Hi Guys ,

Thanks for the info, very useful stuff, i’ll look into it shortly.
encode speed of my 08 Macpro 8core is great, from FCP timeline a 1min clip to H.264 SD PAL one pass 720×576 QT takes about 40 secs, Two pass takes 2min20sec.

I don’t expect a lappy to achieve that kind of speed, I currently use an old Powerbook G4 1.67mhz (because it has P2 PC card slot). it takes over14mins to encode the same 1min clip, That’s Too slow.
I’d like to get the encode rate improved but not invest so many $’s on a platform that will only have limited field use. if it was my only set-up yep, i’d get the latest n greatest, but it’s just a portable editor.

    Cheers for the advice.
