I want to thank Johan Skaneby for saving the company I work for one thousand dollars. My original post was in reference to trading CLIPS and FINISHED SHOW ELEMENTS between Avid and FCP rooms. I was promptly advised by several “experts” that it is necessary to purchase costly software from Automatic Duck to accomplish this.

One fellow even indignantly advised me to stop “complaining” when I expressed surprise at the need for this software. (And my printable advice to that individual is to re-enroll in whatever film and video academy he undoubtedly graduated from and see if they offer any courses in tact, diplomacy or other people skills.)

This software turns out to be absolutely unnecessary, as DV-25 clips transfer just fine between the two platforms without specific setting adjustments or conversion. The initial snags I had run into were anomalous.

    Ragards,

Actually I never complained about anything. It just surprises me that these digital processing methods are that incompatible.

Wow! Several folks have directed me to this site and I viewed it. So it’s necessary to spend $1000 for software just to sucessfully move FCP-exported Quicktimes into Avid and vice-versa??

I’m glad Oakmozart has found a couple of helpful insiders at Avid. Unfortunately the rest of us have to rely on the tech “support” contact info provided with the systems and I have generally found that to be an absolute dead end.

    Those who can’t do… teach.
Those who can’t teach… teach gym.
Those who can’t teach gym… become Producers.

So how could a Producer EVER become a REAL Editor? *wink*

    (My opinion:)

FCP is much more user-friendly and is continuing to stack up well in light of Avid’s complacency over updating or otherwise substantially improving Avid systems (which are hilariously similar to those of the late 1990s). However FCP’s ease of obtainability has probably resulted in an perceived exclusivity of Avid, and unenlightened Producers continue to buy Avids. There is some reason to argue that Avid Editors see slightly higher wages as a result, but I have yet to test this. (I use FCP at home and Avid [Express HD and Adrenalines] at work.) I also see far more bugs with Avid Express than with any FCP versions, v.3 and up.
