Tim, just for clarity, that quote you featured was of an Adobe technician (Wil) and his thoughts on using Preview files for final output.

The bottom line is Adobe discourages that practice due to generational loss. And from my findings it doesn’t speed up the export by much. I hope there is some way to shorten the export process (so it competes with the FCP export experience) that is the norm now.

Boris Red 5.0 64 bit is my answer to the lack of creative, different looking transitions. It has a good library of presets which are a jumping off points for your own creativity. Good GUI with lots of options and controls and filters. Its is out now for PC and in the future for Mac. I searched around a lot and this stands out as the most
powerful tool around for making transitions that work very well with Premiere Pro 5.5

I did extensive testing on this process…

    https://forums.adobe.com/message/3945436#3945436

And here is an explanation from an Adobe technician why using previews is discouraged.

” The ‘Use preview files’ option in PPro is exactly that – if there’s a preview file, it decodes the frame out of it, & re-encodes it into the final file. So while it’ll help in (non-CUDA) effects heavy compositions, it also incurs a generation loss. Generally, we don’t recommend using it (hence the default to off) unless you really are sure that’s what you want.”

And be forewarned, the time you save not transcoding at the front end of the process can be lost by the time it takes to export your project at the end of the process. Unlike FCP, which stitches together all the rendering done while you edit, Premiere renders the enter timeline when it exports. This can be humongous (hours) for large projects or projects with lots of dynamic links to AE or large format projects like Red.
An Adobe technician explained it to me this way when I asked him why PrP rendering on export seemed to take more time than FCP.

“What you’re looking for is what we commonly refer to as smart rendering, and it doesn’t exist in PPro. That’s a Final Cut ‘ism, where it splices rendered data from the preview QT files into the final render. Keep in mind that’s a QuickTime centric feature, & doesn’t translate automatically to all file formats.”

Nobody know whats in store for CS6. If they do they are under NDA. So its a moot point. If things are going well with FCP…if it aint broke, dont fix it. There will be time enough to relearn a new NLE and the different ways it functions in the future. Why rush it?

  • Be forewarned that EVERYTHING is rendered when exporting at the end of a session. Premiere is different then FCP which stitches together all its renders for a fast output. Ive used P2 and Prores recently and for straight cutting they needed no rendering during the edit process.Owners of various models of Mac Pros seem to report different playback performance with certain formats. Of course any supers or dynamic links with AE will require rendering time. But at the end of the session, when you export the video, all the stuff on the timeline will be rendered out to a file. In this way its different than FCP. This is how an Adobe technician explained it to me.

One of the biggest drawbacks prevents me to switch (besides the $ needed to by a beefy PC)is ALL THE DARN MAC SOFTWARE . Cross-grading would be a costly PITA 😀

Since you read the book you know that PrP has a different approach to editing a variety of source clips on its times line.

This article will explain more on the Prores workflow as it applies to PrP 5.5
