Oliver, knowing PrPs weakness in the Media Management department, my instincts are that the EDLs and XMLs might be the cause of your problem.Relinking has been reported as an issue in the work flow you are testing.
You might try posting this at the Adobe Premiere Pro forum where Wil or Todd might be able to have some input.

  • Thats interesting Ann. I have always operated with the Media Cache and Database files on my system drive (where it defaults) will no noticeable problems.
The one time I checked for them to be stored with the media on my external raid array I experienced some issues.

Is this a project that was started on CS6? Was the project moved from another computer to your current one?

Before you buy the PC try upgrading to Lion. I talked to Wayne who participates on this and other forums about his problem being resolved. He was elated that after battling the lag for a long time, the upgrade to Lion cleared it right up. Something to consider.

[Jim Wiseman] ” am not groveling. You seem to be the Windows shill around here. I merely find the Mac to be the superior machine that is in need of an upgrade and OSX a far better operating system. This comes from experience with both OS’s and having to support both systems. As a video VAR for 10 years with about 250 customers, I got more OS related trouble calls from from the 10 Windows based users I had than the 240 Mac OS systems combined. Why don’t you buy your PC and let us just move on? It is the Mac based users Adobe is going for, after all. How many people do you think the user base of FCP 7 was compared to Premiere before FCPX? Those are the numbers Adobe is running and the users they are after. So is Avid. Both are supporting the Mac because they know those users represent where their growth is. I see no “groveling” in hoping that the hardware/software system that non-linear editing was born on via Avid should continue. I am not “groveling”, I just happen to love my Mac, and based on the current state of Dell and HP, apparently a lot of other people do too. Look at the stock prices. HP almost quit making PC’s less than a year ago. Dell is going in the tank 17% down last week. Apple’s valuation 24x Dell’s. If you want to put your money on those horses, go ahead. But don’t ever insult me with a comment like that again just because I have an opinion that I can back up with the ones of my large sample of editors here in Hawaii. It will be a sad day for a lot of people if the Mac Pro is end of life.”

Easy Jim. Your sounding a bit paranoid around the edges. It might be time to chill out about this Mac thing.

  • When you have lots of effects on a clip many times you will need to render it to play it back and watch it. When exporting PrP uses this prerendered (Preview) clip to build the export file. No rendering is done as this export is building each frame.
If you dont render the clip, when you export it has to render all effects AND then rebuild that frame for export.
Using Prerendered (Preview) clips saves on the rendering time during export.

  • Been there, tried that about a year ago with same results. 😀

The Prores workflow in PrP does not use “Smart Rendering” like FCP did. Because PrP supports native clips on the timeline, when it Exports the timeline to your final file format, it rebuilds each frame to that format (instead of just stitching the preview files together like FCP did). So your speed up is realized only when you have clips with effects that you prerender on the timeline. When Exported just just those frames are rebuilt (no additional rendering needed).

Its faster to render in AE then export the files and put them on the timeline. AE uses multiprocessors and generally is faster at rendering than PrP.

So use Previews works, but not in the manner that you and I want. 😀

REMEMBER if you have a powerful enough system (fast processors, powerful GPU,lots of ram, fast array) you can playback your timeline without rendering anything at all. Just export when ready.
