I would have suggested that, but it will move the picture up a line, won’t it? How about changing your timeline to uncompressed 8-bit, which is 720×486?

Centering the 486 on a 480 timeline will result in a field order flip. What happens if you do this but apply a Field Shift filter to the clip? Does that look OK?

1080 24PA uses a special pulldown pattern (advanced pulldown) which is easier for the computer to extract on the fly during capture. Long story short, 24PA is better when you need a truly progressive output. Examples would be a progressive DVD (SD or HD), a progressive Quicktime or Windows Media file, or a file or image sequence for conversion to film.
24P Normal is better if you are only going to output to tape. It can be edited without regard for pulldown. To make progressive clips from it, you have to go through a more complicated pulldown removal process. If you’re outputting only to tape, there’s really no need.
Then there’s 30P. But you didn’t ask about that!
Barry Green’s book on the HVX-200 has good detailed explanation of 24P and 24PA and the advantages of each and of 720 24PN. Look for HD and Broadcast Formats in the FCP manual. There are also DVDs by Noah Kadner, frequently found on this site and other fine people. Tons of good info out there. Look to the post below this one for more.

Just export a Quicktime Movie, using Current Settings. You can choose to check “Make Movie Self-Contained” or not. I use self-contained because it prevents problems with “reference movies” that have lost their media.
Import the QT mov into Squeeze, apply filter, apply compression setting, and “Squeeze It.” One warning: Squeeze deinterlaces by default. You need to apply a filter and uncheck deinterlacing in order to leave progressive sources alone.
Squeeze is one way to get a path from FCP to Windows Media via a PC. Since Squeeze is a Quicktime application, you can use it on a Windows PC to compress to the Windows Media format. It works quite well for that.

I wouldn’t say Squeeze is noticeably faster at anything I’ve compressed on both programs. They have different approaches to cropping, deinterlacing, color and gamma adjustments, etc. If anything, the flexibility is a bit greater with Compressor. The workflow with Squeeze is exceptionally simple and intuitive.

Yes, it’s definitely wrong and would cause stuttering motion. But would it cause a VTR to edit on Field2? My guess is no. I’m not sure what difference it would make at that point, though, as the motion scenes would be very ugly.
I’ll have to defer to someone with more knowledge of field dominance (as opposed to field order as determined by FCP). I think the VTR would still cut on the correct field as proscribed in the particular DV video standard.
To further complicate things, it might be possible to set the VTR to edit on the non-standard field.

That’s a bummer, because Highpoint has a great feature set at a low price point. We’re looking for the best price/performance combo here. The ultimate in speed is less important than stability for my shop. Thanks.

You should find something available. HIghpoint has many flexible arrangements of jacks, cables and RAID support (2314MS for example). Maybe the ATTO R380 can be adapted too (nice card, but $$).

Is yours the “MXF-Aware” type (LTO-3a, I think)? Is that a big advantage? You have multiple systems, so obviously the network attached model works well for you. For a single system, do you think a cheaper SATA LTO would work just as well, even though not “MXF-Aware?”
