    Hi,

I was wondering if Sorensen Squeeze compressed mp4 files faster than Compressor – and if so, how much faster?

    I’m on a G5 PPC, Dual 2.0 with 3.5 GB RAM + MBP 2.3 w/4GB RAM

    Thanks,

    Wayne

I haven’t timed it, but it is pretty quick. The better part, however, is that the compression from Squeeze is better than Compressor…IMHO. Well, if compressed as Sorenson…I get darn good looking compression in that codec…for the PC guys that have to see stuff. And it encodes to Flash too…which is useful.

I wouldn’t say Squeeze is noticeably faster at anything I’ve compressed on both programs. They have different approaches to cropping, deinterlacing, color and gamma adjustments, etc. If anything, the flexibility is a bit greater with Compressor. The workflow with Squeeze is exceptionally simple and intuitive.

I’ve used Sorenson Squeeze in the past, particularly for Flash, and thought it was excellent. But I’ve never used it in association with FCP. What kind of file do you export from FCP to go to Squeeze?

    Hi,

I just did the following test:

Compressed a 10-minute DV NTSC using Compressor 2, Sorensen Squeeze [Demo version] & QuickTime.

I adjusted Compressor and Sorensen to MATCH the settings of the standard QuickTime export settings for MP4 -Broadband High.

    Results:
Compressor 2 completed in 06:50 minutes

Sorenson & Quicktime are STILL running and after 12 minutes, and are at around 25-30% respectively.

Since I have no need for Flash or RealPLayer exports, I’ll probably just stick to Compressor.

Thanks to all who wrote in.

Just export a Quicktime Movie, using Current Settings. You can choose to check “Make Movie Self-Contained” or not. I use self-contained because it prevents problems with “reference movies” that have lost their media.

Import the QT mov into Squeeze, apply filter, apply compression setting, and “Squeeze It.” One warning: Squeeze deinterlaces by default. You need to apply a filter and uncheck deinterlacing in order to leave progressive sources alone.

Squeeze is one way to get a path from FCP to Windows Media via a PC. Since Squeeze is a Quicktime application, you can use it on a Windows PC to compress to the Windows Media format. It works quite well for that.
