After shooting a couple of project with my HVX200 at 720 24PN and being very happy with the results, I recently experimented with the 1080i 24P setting. Wow, the 1080 image is most impressive. Other than taking much more space on the P2 card, are there comments, suggestion pro/cons to shooting projects in 1080i 24P? I am editing of FCP 6.0.2

    Thanks in advance.

One issue is that the CCD chips are supposedly somewhat more optimized for 720p. Also in 1080 you don’t get up to 60fps in variable frame rates. Other than that and the space issues it’s solid.

I thought I remember reading something by Berry that the 1080 was less compressed the 720.

Next Month I will be shooting my western short which will be shot in the 1080 24pa and 720 24PN, but final product will be in 720.

I like to shoot a step above for some projects. We have a shoot with a guy ridding a horse while we are shooting from a truck. By shooting that in 1080 I have a a lot of extra room to use the program SmoothCam to take out all the extra bumps. I just have to frame it with extra room on the edges.

I did a test last month between the 2 formats and saw no major difference with the 2 formats. I thought there might be a problem with the interlace 1080 24pa so I shoot lots of small wires and things that might have had some interlacing problems and it looked great.

    Thanks for the responses.
What is the difference between 1080 24P and 1080 24PA?
Also, in terms of archiving footage, how much bigger are the 1080 24P original P2 clips than the 720 24P clips?

1080 24PA uses a special pulldown pattern (advanced pulldown) which is easier for the computer to extract on the fly during capture. Long story short, 24PA is better when you need a truly progressive output. Examples would be a progressive DVD (SD or HD), a progressive Quicktime or Windows Media file, or a file or image sequence for conversion to film.

24P Normal is better if you are only going to output to tape. It can be edited without regard for pulldown. To make progressive clips from it, you have to go through a more complicated pulldown removal process. If you’re outputting only to tape, there’s really no need.

Then there’s 30P. But you didn’t ask about that!

Barry Green’s book on the HVX-200 has good detailed explanation of 24P and 24PA and the advantages of each and of 720 24PN. Look for HD and Broadcast Formats in the FCP manual. There are also DVDs by Noah Kadner, frequently found on this site and other fine people. Tons of good info out there. Look to the post below this one for more.

[Noah Kadner] “One issue is that the CCD chips are supposedly somewhat more optimized for 720p.”

I don’t know what this means. The system delivers more resolution in 1080 mode than it does in 720 mode, so how would the CCDs be more optimized for 720?

Granted, 1080 mode doesn’t deliver a huge res boost over 720 mode, but — hey, if you want what the system can deliver, why not get all that it can deliver? 1080 is higher res and less compressed than 720, on an HVX200.
