OMG!! On the other hand, it seems to stick in my memory that DV NTSC will play in real time in a DV50 timeline–even prior to mixed timelines in 6.0. Panasonic may have made that possible. If so, you can capture DV NTSC but edit in a DV50 timeline. I can’t find corroborating evidence of it, so I could be blowing smoke on this one. Anybody??

Also, we never plug Firewire cameras into computers with the cameras powered up. This can easily toast the Firewire input of the computer. Not sure if it can toast the camera too. Your environment of people plugging in with power on willy-nilly is likely to result in fried firewire circuits. Bummer. Sorry.

Could you be one field (1/60 of a second) short of complete? Does FCP’s Item Properties in the Browswer show the length as the same as shown in Quicktime? Is the clip interlaced? Is your Canavas set to less than 100%?

Yep, that’s a good one. There are other valid choices also. 8-bit uncompressed to DV50 is a common one if you want to save disk space.

I’m not very familiar with HDV issues, but you should be able to edit on a Macbook Pro with better success than that. Why not start by trouble-shooting your setup for the HDV to see if that can be improved? It’s far better to stay with a normal Easy Setup than to try and create a custom setup like this. The 640×360 approach is not the way to go.

It’s likely RENDERING that is slowing you down. When you export direct from FCP all effects that require render are rendered again and transcoded to the target codec.
When you export a reference movie (leave “make self-contained” UNchecked) or a self-contained movie (check it) FCP renders only as needed. If everything is already rendered, it will zip right through in a very short time.

Yes, the non-self contained will work in Compressor.
What type of drive were you exporting the self-contained QT to? I’m curious as to why it resulted in the ref movie. Any ideas on that?

Thanks for the tips everyone. When you learn FCP in the heat of battle, you don’t get all the detail that you would if you had the time to slog through a book or a tutorial. These tips help to fill in the missing know-how.

Sheer was ahead of it’s time. I don’t have it yet, but I’m finding several uses for it now.
