ok, i’m back from a weekend of ‘relaxing’ with the wife and kids…

i took into account all of the above suggestions. and i’m rendering. fcp is telling me it’s going to take 17 hours…which i’m assuming (hoping0 is wrong but that’s a good indicator that it’s got a whole lot of rendering to correct all those crappy stills. the program is about a half hour of stills with a lot of motion and filters and effects so it could be right…

anyway… Dan: regarding your blue strip over the timeline…interesting because I have NEVER had a blue strip over the timeline…even when everything looked good back in FCP 4.5 and/or 5.0. but I’d like to hear more about that…

i’ve been having problem swith stills that looked awesome in 4.5 looking like crap in 5.0 so, i’m investigating
going back to 4.5

todd, thanks, i tried that too…. the same mysterious little gray line appears in the timeline (of the new sequences/projects) above the problem stills….

that’s he first thing I thought of and did..BUT it didn’t work. It’s weird, it’s only happened to certain clips and actually, they’re not all clips with motion.

I’ve noticed a very little small subtle gray line above the timeline where there usually is green or red (indicating rendering necessary).

here is the text from the window that came up when i first opened the project in fcp5:

“this project contains one or more sequences with this version of final cut pro can render with motion tab quality scaling, rotation, etc) , please choose a scaling quality to use (drop down) New quality> fastest, normal or best)

here’s where I think I went wrong, but I can’t remember what I did…
there is a box to check with the text:
remove exisiting render files (this action is not undoable), (keeping exisiting render files may result in sequences with quality differences in rendered material.)

any more suggestions??

well, that’s good news, since, like i said, I’ve been using the 83min for a long time (5 years or more) and have had very little problem with dropouts etc. Just fyi. thanks

The manual says to yuse 60 (63)…but my question is …is it ok …do others have experience using the 83min Panasonic tapes (AY-DVM83PQ). I’ve been using them in my good ole Panasonic EZ-1 minidv camera for years without any problems whatsoever.

I just used (2) 83min tapes last week in my new dvx100a without any troubles.

I’m just hoping that the reason the manual says to use 63min tapes is because they’re more “reliable” and that they’re not going to cause any actual harm to the cmaera.

hmm..with all due respect.. after reading that explanation, I’m even more confused.

I am new to the whole 24P, 24pA and film conversion world… I am respected in the field for my composition, lighting, interview style, etc… but learning about all of the 24P stuff is alien to me. Of course, I am interested in finding out all the details and I realize that there is a fairly steep learning curve with this new camera…but um, is there anyone else who might be able to offer a more simplified version to help answer “BurnsaiChris”‘s original question. I too am interested.

I’d like to know if I’ll have any trouble with the following scenario:

shooting in 24P mode (NOT 24pA mode) and then using my good ole sony gvd-300 minidv deck to digitize into FCP with the my “standard” DV NTSC 48kHtz capture preset

(now, noah, you got a little huffy with one of my earlier posts, so please don’t take this reply the wrong way….thanks 🙂

once again…a much appreciated reply. I’ve got the sony mdr 7506 which are pretty darn good but they’re not noise cancelling. no biggey… I can deal with it. thanks again.
