STILLS that looked great in FCP4.5 look very BAD in FCP5
Posted by Tom Adams on December 2, 2005 at 7:28 pmHello,
I just upgraded to FCP5 and when I opened an old project with about 1/2 hour of stills and played from the timeline (on NTSC monitor)… all of the clips with any motion keyframes (ken burns style) look terrible…very jaggedy and such.
I know this must have something to do with the old render files and the new settings. I noticed the warning window that came up when I first opened FCP5 regarding render files but I was unsure how to avoid this problem…
what can I do to return to the images backto their crisp full resolution.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

that’s he first thing I thought of and did..BUT it didn’t work. It’s weird, it’s only happened to certain clips and actually, they’re not all clips with motion.
I’ve noticed a very little small subtle gray line above the timeline where there usually is green or red (indicating rendering necessary).
here is the text from the window that came up when i first opened the project in fcp5:
“this project contains one or more sequences with this version of final cut pro can render with motion tab quality scaling, rotation, etc) , please choose a scaling quality to use (drop down) New quality> fastest, normal or best)
here’s where I think I went wrong, but I can’t remember what I did…
there is a box to check with the text:
remove exisiting render files (this action is not undoable), (keeping exisiting render files may result in sequences with quality differences in rendered material.)any more suggestions??

December 2, 2005 at 8:05 pmTry creating a new sequence and copy/pasting the entire timeline into the new sequence. Or you could go a step further, and create a whole new project, new sequence, then copy/paste. Even if this doesn’t work, the results could help troubleshoot where the problem exists.

Not sure if this will help, but the line above the sequence should be blue.
If it’s any other color, something isn’t completely rendered.
And also your video processing setting may be wrong.
First go to sequence, settings, video processing tab.
select best for motion filtering quality. hit OK.
Second, go to sequence, render all, and check all the colors there ALL OF THEM.
Now go to sequence, render all, both, (for both audio and video).
See if this helps.Dan

December 2, 2005 at 9:33 pmI’m having the same problem in FCP 5. Almost any picture, mostly use .jpg’s & .psd’s, looks like crap. The work around that I have found is put the picture in anyway and change the field dominance for the sequence to none. Doesn’t seem to make anything else look different but the photoshop files look wonderful. I’ve read in other forums not to do this but it’s the only way I’ve found to fix the problem and it works for me.

In your Sequence Settings make sure your motion render is set to “Best”. Normal is default for FCP 5 and it doesn’t look good at all.

December 3, 2005 at 4:36 pmThere is no “motion render” in the sequence settings. I’m assuming it’s the “motion filtering quality” under the video processing tab in sequence settings?

yep, whatever it’s called, I’m not near my system. You should only use “Best” for all your projects.
