with your multiclip in the viewer, click on the middle “pill” button.
Choose video only. This should do what you want.

you can always change your mind and deliver in SD, but that will give you flexibility, not to mention a much higher quality look. Of course you will need the resources like hard drive space and proper monitoring.
advice regarding the “black bars on left and right”…..don’t just leave them black. Fill that space with something (gfx or footage) that adds to the design. Motion is great for creating moving backgrounds.

Everybody has different experiences with external drives.
I have had very little trouble with Lacie drives, but I know they seem to have a bad rep.
My oldest Lacie is 3-4 years old and still running like a champ.
I have achived mp3, photos, and even some old SD projects and footage.I have had a Lacie go south on me and I did lose several hours of digitized material, unfortunate. One call to Lacie, and they replaced my drive and I continued on.
I have had very bad experience with WD-My Book drives, but I bet several people will post and say that they have been using them with no trouble.
It is important to note that every drive you have ever seen, or worked on, will eventually fail. Its inherent in the design.
Whatever drive you decide on CAN (and eventually WILL) fail or develop problems. Archive according to the importance of your media, which may mean multiple archives, in case your back up fails too.
just 2 cents from an editor with 15 years experience, who started in the linear days of 3/4″ tapes, and the edit suite took up a whole room, not just a computer tower.

did you repair permissions before AND after you did the initial upgrade?

Not sure if this helps, but that is the error message that I get when I try to open a project created in FCP 6.0.2, on a machine that has an older version, say FCP 5.x.
From your description it doesn’t sound like this is your issue.
You may have some corruption. Try to create a new sequence, then copy/paste everything into it, see it that helps.
If not, try creating a new project, then copy/paste everything into it.
Might try deleting all your render files and repairing permissions.

In addition to all this great advise.
It is always a good thing to run a “repair permissions” before and after installing major software programs. You’ll find it under Applications/Utilities/disk utility.
In a initial install, like your planning, I may do this 2 or 3 times, depending on the OS updates that pop up.
Maybe overkill, but it is recommended.
Heck, it sure hasn’t hurt me to do it!
