Try reconnecting from the timeline. Right-click the problem clip and select “Reconnect Media” from there. I’m not positive that this will work but I seem to remember doing that when I couldn’t get a clip in my timeline to reconnect even after I did the “Reconnect Media” from the bin.
Hope this helps.

May 29, 2007 at 5:09 pm in reply to: Annoying Interlacing Issue with mpeg2s – got any ideas?I’ve run into this same problem (even with SD footage) on FCP 5.1.x when my process involves first exporting the native QuickTime, then importing that into Compressor. I can offer no reason as to why, but I can take the same sequence and export through FCP “using Compressor” and while it ties up Final Cut, the end result looks right.
Give it a try.

I’m having the exact same problem today using QuickTime conversion. I’m cutting a short film and the director wanted a QuickTime of the rough-cut where it currently stands. No problem, pretty standard workflow for me (in SD anyways).
I’ve exported it several times, and each time I get the same problems, which are very similar to what cadobee described, with the addition of the sound being out of sync periodically. It seems to happen near or during a dissolve.
It’s not a big deal to me right now (the director is a friend of mine, and he can live with the glitches) but I wanted to throw it out there that this problem exists. I am going to try to keep working in HDV native, but I’m getting a bit worried that problems like this will persist throughout the process. If we had a better HDV deck I would have brought it in as DVCProHD, but alas, the only outputs on my deck are component RCA (and RCA audio as well).
The end-product for this project will be a SD DVD for festival screenings, and I will probably use my Kona LHe to downconvert in real-time for a DigiBeta dub. Should I think about converting the final product to DVCProHD 720P, then to DVD? I’m trying to figure out how adding another compression scheme to the mix could be beneficial, and I believe I read this advice somewhere in this post.

Yeah, it is pretty easy to tweak the settings. If your video is not looking the best, click on the “Video” tab (next to “Summary”) and you can adjust your Video Bitrate which should help in the quality. It also has a bitrate calculator of sorts built in, where you can target a specific file size, or see what the file size would be a a given bitrate.
I’ve had decent results with that program, but it did take some adjusting.

You can use ffmpegx to turn any movie out of Final Cut (or any program for that matter) into PSP format. And it’s a free download.

[Les Kaye] “Peterd] “Avid’s titling capabilities are much stronger”
You’re kidding right?”
No, actually he is not kidding at all. If you haven’t used Avid then I understand, but he is referring to being able to see the background video for the title you are creating WITHOUT the extra step of kicking out a QT ref movie and then importing that into LiveType. That workflow is very “clunky” IMO.
Sometimes it is great to create a simple graphic with the ability to line it up with your video, and do so without jumping applications.

Millions+ just means that it has alpha (transparency). You will notice a huge quality loss because you are working with DV and it is highly compressed. That said, you just export a QuickTime move (self-contained like it sounds like you are doing) and pull that into AE. I’m a bit confused where you would be seeing the “Millions of Colors” for DV footage, but you may be talking about your render settings coming out of AE.

Try compressing the video using Compressor. It has a 16×9 (or “widescreen”) preset that should set you straight. It is probably a setting somewhere in iDVD, but honestly I never use that program. If you have DVD Studio Pro with your FCP Studio bundle, it would be a great program to learn.

Hey Jeremy, I have a Kona LHe. How would you go about doing this in real time? If I open a DVCProHD sequence and drop a DVCProHD clip in it with my Easy Setup still on 10-bit NTSC, I do get a preview on my SD monitor, but playback only happens in the Canvas and the external monitor is a freeze frame. Perhaps we should have sprung for the Kona 3?

We are needing to make master tapes (DigiBeta) at standard definition. But I figured out getting the right setting turned on in Compressor, so we are good to go.
Thanks!
