  • That workflow sounds pretty standard, man. Do you HAVE to bring your final graphics into Avid at 3:1 though? If you are experiencing quality loss, that’s probably where it is happening.

Yes QT is 10-bit, but I think that is more based on codec…

Importing into AE @ 16-bit should be fine, as far as I know.

And I don’t know what microcosm is… Hope this helps.

[Alex Udell] “If you “collapse” something, you can step into it, but NOT un collpase it right?

Yes, that is correct. Once collapsed, I think there may be a work-around to “uncollapse”, but it wouldn’t be pretty. Would probably consist of some copy/paste action, but I’ve given up when thinking about doing that and just rebuilt it. Good luck!

    Hi Alex!

Avid is a bit different than most NLE’s in regards to FX. Basically what you need to do is Alt-drag additional FX onto a clip that you want to add FX to. They will apply in the order that you put them on, and you can “step in” to the FX clip just as if it were a nested (Avid calls it “collapsed”) clip. In doing this you can tweak the settings of each individual FX. Be careful that you apply them in the correct order, as that is harder to change later on.

    Hope this helps!

You should run this thing through Sorenson Squeeze if that is what you have. You can change the settings in there based on what you want to do with the video (i.e. stream for broadband, 56K, etc…). It will output QuickTime or WMV (maybe even RealPlayer? cant remember) and the quality is pretty good. You need to get that file size down considerably though. That thing is 100mb right now. Good luck!

Your DV source footage is a little blurry compared to other sources. The same is true of a DV timeline, but it doesn’t hurt your DV footage at all. That said, “up-rezzing” to a uncompressed timeline won’t really help your footage (except perhaps in the color correction), but any graphics that you add will remain uncompressed rather than having to be compressed into the DV codec.

So… graphics look better in an uncompressed timeline. And I would output through that Kona if you can. Even going to Beta SP from uncompressed would be better than going to DV through FireWire.

I’ve noticed it before on Meridian based systems too. Especially our Xpress box would do the non-updating IO numbers. I think one of the Symphony versions may have even done this a bit, but the problem must have been corrected because it works properly now.

You may have to digitize it from the XL1. Even though there shouldn’t be, there are some compatibility issues between Canon/Panasonic and Sony that I’ve noticed. That is what has worked for me. Good luck.

  • Use whatever you want, man. Use what makes you feel better. No need to trash an app over its color-schemes though. I mean, other than colors, the “tab thing”, and small icons (you’d prefer less screen space for timeline, etc?) was there anything related to video editing that you didn’t like?

I use both Avid (Symphony) and FCP every day. They are both great apps and do different things better than the other, but the color-scheme rant is a first for me.

July 14, 2005 at 8:46 pm in reply to: Updating nested sequences

If it has been rendered it usually won’t update. Right click the nest to open in viewer and then change a setting forcing a re-render (like opactiy, scale, etc.), then change it back to original setting. This is my work-around, there may be more/better ones.

July 11, 2005 at 7:51 pm in reply to: Uncompressed

Actually, I didn’t say anything at all about a DVD. I didn’t even know that that was being discussed.

You’ll notice I was responding to Mr. Video’s post where he said:

“I guess what I am asking is : can you do this without a capture card interveening? MY point is that since titling in DV is iffy, edit in DV – move to SD for titling and then bring it back into DV? Would that really help titling a DV sequence?”

It is correct that going from uncompressed to DVD will look better than going from DV to DVD. I did not mean to imply otherwise.
