Waking Life was painted and animated by hand frame by frame…
Those Schwab ads, as I remember, used some proprietary software written by the guy who animated Waking Life (not Linklater but someone else).
You might be able to get close with cartooner and maybe some other filters…

  • When rendering with the animation codec make sure million colors + is highlighted (the plus means alpha channel).

You can just highlight that first letter and adjust the size accordingly…

    Glad you figured it out…
I don’t know how many times I’ve stared blankly at the screen thinking I have no idea how to do this and then voila I just see it!

    Kent,
-Once your spline is extruded, with your spline track highlited
-go to the textures tab. Click the checkbox next to “fr” for front
-change map method to clip; you’ll see in your timeline a front texture tack appear
-import in the still you want to use if you haven’t already
-drag and drop your still onto the front texture track.
-you may need to position and scale your image to fit it in

    Hope this helps!

It all depends on the footage you’re working with but you might want to play around with the hue/saturation filter, levels filter and contrast filter to turn your footage in a high contrast picture and then apply the make alpha filter…
You might need to use a garbage mask also.
I’ve tried this recipe a few times and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t; it all depends on the footage.
Might be worth a shot to you, though.
