I really thought they would redesign the case as well when the 8 core was announced…
not that I dislike the case now; I just thought they’d redesign it!

I’m not sitting front of my Avid right now, so this is from memory…
Set the lifespan long and you’ll not want any gravity or direction or force…
You want your little guys to kind of sit there for a long time just sparkle…Also, try setting the composite mode to apply or overlay, that might help, too.

Avid and Boris figure out the handles for you.
If your master clip is 1 minute long but you use the middle 20 seconds in your timeline, and add dissolves between your clips, Avid and Boris take care of the extra video needed for transitions. Avid uses the 15 or 30 frames before to complete the dissolve.
A couple of tips… always digitize more than you think you’ll need. If your are digitizing in 3 minutes of video, digitize 10 seconds BEFORE your shot starts and 10 seconds AFTER your shot end so you’ll have enough for handles between your shots.
Hopefully that helps.

If you don’t have Photoshop, The Gimp works nicely also…
and it’s free!

3d model import is BLUE only. But don’t discount BLUE; great proeduct and Boris just cut the price on hal, I believe and is offering discounts for RED users…

Chris,
Did you trash your prefs file before you installed RED4? If not do it now and it might aleviate some of those problems.

Stephen hit it right on the head. RED is the way to go for you. RED is Graffiti and Fx PLUS Corner Pin, Motion Tracking, a good particle system and an easy to use interface.
The great thing about RED (that for me puts it above After Effects and Combustion) is if your editor is using Liquid; you can do all of your effects and compositing in the RED Engine on a separate machine (provided you have access to the source material), save your .red file, import your .red file onto your editor’s Liquid machine, relink your footage and render.
The only thing I would add to Stephen’s post is please don’t hesitate once you get RED to ask any questions you have on creative cow…

I would use displacement map…
I made a quick, down and dirty .red if you want to email me off list; I’ll send it to you.
Displacement Map is a great and powerful filter once you get the theory of it.
I found a map of Australia online, cut out an alpha, made a white fill of Australia (all in Photoshop); imported that .psd into RED and used desplacement map…
