Ok, so what can I do? Should I uninstall and reinstall the old version? I do have a folder that it looks like I was saving project backups to … Just not database files. Can I open those old project files or does davinci just periodically self destruct and delete everything it’s users have done?

Looking at my previous install files, I think the previous version I had installed was 16.2.2

I just installed version 16.2.7 today. I don’t know what version I had before. It seemed to just disappear from my computer with the latest windows update. I’m running Windows 10 pro 64bit. I may have backed up the database at some point but I’m not sure where it is. Does this software delete your database and all of your projects every time you upgrade??

For anyone else with this question, the answer is to select the event on the timeline, then press “F”, or select
Timeline —>Match Frame from the dropdown. That will open the clip in the source edit window with that clip selected and the cursor exactly where it is in that clip on the timeline. This can also be used to restore a timeline clip’s audio that has been accidentally deleted.

Thanks for your response. But I’m looking for a way to label sections of footage. Simply changing the file names doesn’t help much for a 45 minute interview. During that interview the interviewee may have said 20 useable soundbytes. I’m looking for a way to mark and label the in/out points of those sound bytes so I can quickly find them and/or visually browse the contents of an interview and see what useable things were said and where. It’s hard for me to imagine building an edit without that ability. Inevitably, my client will say “Did he make any good remarks about X at all?”. I don’t want to have to go re-watch the 45 minute interview every time I get that question or I myself am looking for something that I know I heard when I watched it the first time.

Thanks for the response. I hadn’t heard about that transcription tool. I personally have never liked going the transcription route because the text doesn’t convey how the words were spoken. For example, a person may have said a good line, but maybe they sounded depressed when they said it, or maybe there was a loud sound in the background that made it unusable.
Also, for smaller projects, I don’t want to go to transcriptions, but I would like to be able to label different sections of interviews. It seems like such a relatively easy thing for the software engineers to implement and for many of us, it’s such a critical tool. Is there really no way to label portions of footage in DaVinci?

Update: I realized the “Stop and go to previous position” command in the keyboard customization is a toggle that switches the ‘stop’ command back and forth between pause and stop (and return). So, what I did was I programmed that toggle command to cntrl+space. It’s not idea, but it allows me to quickly switch between the spacebar being a stop button and a pause button. If anyone has a way to make the spacebar into a stop button while the K button is a pause, that would be great. But for now, I suppose I can get used to this workaround. I hope this helps someone else.

did you ever find a way to do this? Seems silly that in Premiere we have to go to so much trouble to create a smooth dissolve. Why would the default be a clunky linear cross dissolve?
I’m also a Vegas user transitioning to premiere (and not enjoying it so much).

I doubt Vegas will buy Vegasaur. Vegasaur has been around for a long time. Vegas occasionally adds a feature that Vegasaur was needed for prior, but so far Vegasaur remains separate. I’m guessing that they don’t want to have to maintain and be responsible for the complexities that Vegasaur adds. But who knows!

If you really want some added capabilities, you can also check out the Boris Continuum plugin pack. That is a beast.

I’m going to further peak your interest in Vegasaur. The ‘Markers’ tool in Vegasaur has a way to demote clips so you can do just what you are wanting to do. That same tool can be set to demote markers/regions, trim away all non-regioned material, and remove the gaps between the now trimmed clips with one click of a button. You can add a button to open the marker tool (as well as other Vegasaur tools) to your toolbar, so they are right there.

Without Vegasaur, what you can do (although a bit less convenient), is double click on a region on the timeline to select it, right click on the event on the timeline within that region, and select ‘open in trimmer’. This will open the source media in the trimmer with that region selected. Then hit ‘r’ to create the region in the trimmer. I know …it’s one at a time and not super awesome if you have a ton of regions, but you’ll find that you can get pretty fast at this. Even though I have Vegasaur I still find myself doing this a lot because it doesn’t require me to open up a tool dialog box. If you want to take the name of the region as well, you have to add in a step: After double clicking the region on the timeline, right click on the region, go to ‘rename’, command+c to copy the text, then proceed to open that region in the trimmer, hit ‘r’, then paste in the name. Again, a lot of steps, but you can get pretty fast at it.
