  • marker at same time as region – how to select marker when region flag is on top, and vice versa

I’m trying to change the name of a region. if i click the ending flag, the “rename” option does not exist, so I need to click the beginning flag, but that flag is covered over by a marker at the same time point. i can sometimes get the marker selected, but when i then try to right-click, delete, nothing happens. Just pressing the Delete button does nothing either. Nor can I bring the region marker to the forefront. If I double-click the marker text, I can rename the marker, but that is of no help to me. I could use the Edit Details window if I was experiencing this in the Timeline, but I’m in the Trimmer.

wish #1: in the trimmer, batch create subclips from regions*
wish #2: same, in the timeline (on a single track with no overlapping files)
    * (ideally with the option to name the subclip using the region text – either appended to or replacing all or part of the filename)

I don’t have Vegas 15, but in Sony Vegas Pro 13 if you have a Marker and a Region beginning at the same point, I can click on the endpoint flag of the Region and then ‘Ctrl+Left Arrow’ to move the beginning flag. A Right Click then gives me context menu of the ‘Regions’ and ‘Rename’ can be selected.

I can find no magic keystroke to toggle between ‘Region’ and ‘Marker’ flag when they align at the same point. But Zooming in a moving one or the other even by a frame, will then allow the ‘Ctrl+Left Arrow’ or ‘Ctrl+Right Arrow’ to step to each type individually.

Yeah, I usually zoom in and drag either the marker or start flag of the region to separate them so I can rename one or the other. If you leave your cursor there, it will snap back into place.

Your first wish is already something you can do. Within the trimmer, you can select multiple regions by clicking one region flag and then holding shift and clicking another region flag. This will select all regions in between. then right click on one of the regions and create subclip. This will create subclips for all of the regions and drop them into whatever folder is currently selecte din the Project Media Window.

I personally don’t like to work with subclips in much because they currently don’t allow you to bring back footage that wasn’t included in the region that you made the subclip from. Instead, I usually double click regions in the trimmer one at a time and hit the “A” key to drop them down onto the timeline. This gives you a sequence of segments of the source footage that are not restricted like subclips are. Hope that makes sense.

also, if you want to get really fancy, do yourself a favor and buy Vegasaur. I think it costs $100 but if you use Vegas a lot it is worth $1000. In Vegasaur there is a tool called “Markers” that allows you to do all sorts of automated things with regions, like (on the timeline) automatically cut away everything that is not in a region and close the gaps between them with one click.

I’m afraid I don’t understand your second wish.

    Thanks Doug, Thanks Tim,
(I hope Doug receives this Reply, clicked from Tim’s post)

Yes, the zooming in and shifting a flag by a frame or two, doing my thing, then shifting it back – that is workable. Not elegant, but manageable. Thanks.

Tim, thanks for saying how to batch create subclips from regions in the trimmer! Awesome!
(Also, I found if I don’t want all the regions between the first and last Region, ctrl instead of shift lets me select multiple regions. Or I can use shift to select all regions between the first and last selected regions, and then use ctrl to exclude some, if I want.)

Just yesterday I discovered the same problem with subclips you mention. Much or most times, I don’t extend beyond the subclip, so this limitation normally does not affect me, but I can imagine it being a pain with some projects. Thanks for reminding me about “A” (add to timeline) – something I learned once, used twice, but then forgot. I’ll try that as an alternative to subclips.

I’ll edit my message signature to remove Wish #1

Wish #2: Sometimes I don’t anticipate a benefit from using the Trimmer so I start working straight in the Timeline, but then end up with several regions I want to turn into subclips. If there was a “Demote Media Markers” script (like the “Promote Media Markers” script that comes with Vegas), I could just click Demote… and then batch create subclips from regions in the Trimmer. Since I can’t find a Demote Media Markers script, I’m hoping to find a way to batch-create subclips from the Timeline. I acknowledge that if a region contains more than one clip, a subclip by definition can’t possibly be created, so if there was a batch method, I understand any such region would be skipped. But for regions that contain only single clips, surely it should be possible to batch-create subclips. I tried your shift-click method of selecting multiple regions. It did succeed in selecting multiple regions … actually, perhaps only the region headers, not the regions themselves …. Alas, clicking “create subclip” within one of the selected regions only created the one subclip. Do you know a way to batch-create subclips from regions in the Timeline?

(And thanks Tim for further raising my interest in Vegasaur. That feature you mention sounds valuable indeed. I’ll review the other features.)

I’m going to further peak your interest in Vegasaur. The ‘Markers’ tool in Vegasaur has a way to demote clips so you can do just what you are wanting to do. That same tool can be set to demote markers/regions, trim away all non-regioned material, and remove the gaps between the now trimmed clips with one click of a button. You can add a button to open the marker tool (as well as other Vegasaur tools) to your toolbar, so they are right there.

Without Vegasaur, what you can do (although a bit less convenient), is double click on a region on the timeline to select it, right click on the event on the timeline within that region, and select ‘open in trimmer’. This will open the source media in the trimmer with that region selected. Then hit ‘r’ to create the region in the trimmer. I know …it’s one at a time and not super awesome if you have a ton of regions, but you’ll find that you can get pretty fast at this. Even though I have Vegasaur I still find myself doing this a lot because it doesn’t require me to open up a tool dialog box. If you want to take the name of the region as well, you have to add in a step: After double clicking the region on the timeline, right click on the region, go to ‘rename’, command+c to copy the text, then proceed to open that region in the trimmer, hit ‘r’, then paste in the name. Again, a lot of steps, but you can get pretty fast at it.

Vegasaur interest piqued. Now I’m wondering if Magix might buy Vegasaur and integrate it into Vegas Pro 17. (or a later build of VP16?)

I doubt Vegas will buy Vegasaur. Vegasaur has been around for a long time. Vegas occasionally adds a feature that Vegasaur was needed for prior, but so far Vegasaur remains separate. I’m guessing that they don’t want to have to maintain and be responsible for the complexities that Vegasaur adds. But who knows!

If you really want some added capabilities, you can also check out the Boris Continuum plugin pack. That is a beast.
