Aharon and mr_gfx- what are the exact error messages that you are getting?

Is your comp background black? AE is probably importing the text as black, and you can’t see black on a black background, of course. Turn on AE’s transparency grid, change the background color of the comp, or apply an effect to change the color of the text.
I would recommend you use Photoshop 7 for text, btw. It just works with text so much better than Photoshop 5.

There’s no difference in how you change the length of a layer in AE7.
If you can’t extend the length of a still image, what you might have is not a still image, but an image sequence. Check the Type column for the image file in the Project window. AE7 likes to turn on the “image sequence” checkbox in the Import dialog for any image it detects could be part of a sequence (ie., the folder contains numbered files), or you could also have turned on the checkbox for a single image. Re-import the single file with the checkbox off and you should be fine.
BTW, to change the length of still images in a comp (regardless of their format), go to the Preferences > Import, and set the length in the Still Footage area.

There is no Text tool in AE 5.5. That was added with AE 6.0. You can either create your text in Photoshop, or use the Basic Text effect.

The Slideshow Wizard in Photoshop Elements can do a lot of the same things. Imaginate may be able to do some more complex things, though.
You should be able to build a slideshow using After Effects or Premiere Pro that is comparable or better than anything Imaginate can do. You just have to build it manually.

I thought this was a QuickTime problem. Try updating to the latest (7.1) and it should clear up.
You can also hear audio in AE by using the . key on the keypad (Audio-only preview) or hold Option (ALT on Windows) when scrubbing the timeline.

I’m not clear on where your problem is. There’s no case where resampling wouldn’t let Nearest Neighbor be available. Unless you don’t have the resample option checked, in which case you aren’t really resampling!
If you need to target an output size, you might want to shrink the image first, then enlarge it with the Nearest Neighbor option on to go BACK to the size you need.

If you want to run multiple memory-hog applications at once, like AE and Photoshop and FCP, then having lots of RAM is a good thing. Mac OS can allocate 3 GB of RAM separately to EACH application. Of course, it’s still more difficult to split up the processor time, so you couldn’t really render in AE, render in FCP, and apply big filters in Photoshop all at the same time. But all three apps could be active and you could work between them easily.

Via scripting, this is more than likely possible. But there’s no built-in function to schedule a render.
