Well… if you’re running CS4 v4.2.1, it sounds like it’s some sort of bug then. Very likely it’s something that was introduced with a recent version of QT…one that probably arrived long after CS4 was released if you’re completely up to date…

Since CS4 is relative history (original release was September, 2008), and CS5 was such a sweeping change, I suppose you could try to back-date QT and see if an older version helps the problem.

As i said, i didn’t run into any issues with ProRes on Windows with CS4 (I actually have an Adobe TV bit on using it…worked well), but I’m certain I was using a version of both QT and ProRes that fit that time period. Unfortunately, it can be a challenge to troubleshoot systems when you have 2011 media and OS versions with a 2008 application.

As far as getting email…I tend to use a 400.00 laptop sitting beside the edit system anyway…though I know of plenty of Windows editors who have their email open all day.

Having a web mail client like Gmail seems to have almost no impact as the computer isn’t constantly “pulling in” mail to a local client like Outlook or Thunderbird…but that’s my personal experience, everyone is different.

[Philipp Hampl] ” I did all that was suggested to find out that the acceleration called mercury engine would only work with codecs other then those that would enable my I/o card (Blackmagic) to monitor the progamm to external monitors?!”

On Windows with AJA, I can monitor externally with AJA sequence settings. CUDA has a smaller advantage, but the external monitor works…(again, CUDA isn’t tied to codecs as neither is PPro when it comes to sequence settings).

The third party makes sequence settings that tie into their board of course, and AJA has sequence settings that account for nearly every frame rate and size (codec is irrelevant)…but I don’t have any BlackMagic systems, so I don’t know how they work.

I have a feeling there may be a restriction outside of Adobe…but then it’s been a long time since I used a Mac, so I have no idea what Adobe is facing on the Apple side of the fence either.

Are you using Internet Explorer? What browser you decide to use has an impact as well, though Vista was an unfortunate awkward puberty stage on the way to Windows 7. I suspect if you ever decided to put Windows 7 on the machine, it wouldn’t be as finnicky.

Clearing the temp files might be something you want to do as I have no idea how Netflix buffers, etc.

My daughter’s laptop is the only Windows Vista machine we have and I really don’t like that OS…skipped it entirely for my edit systems.

I’ve used Boxx and they’ve been great.

Alex from DV411 is on several of these forums, they handle HP z800 systems, which are high-end professional workstations, and they have the support after sale too, and Alex knows his stuff.

ADK has a good reputation, but I have no first hand experience wuith them,

Puget systems is a new player on my radar…I’ve heard from some users who have used and like them recently…

Safe Harbor is another system builder based in the midwest, they have several platforms they work from…

I’m sure there are some I don’t know about as well.

November 3, 2011 at 3:31 pm in reply to: Resolution Difficulties Transferring P2 Footage to DVD

This was my thought as well…it appears your 24p footage is on a 25i sequence, which is already funky, and then going down to 29.97i standard def is just the icing on the artifact…er…cake.

First off…you said the footage is P2 but you didn’t say whether it was DVCProHD or AVC-intra…that makes a resolution difference right there.

Check the footage settings and find out the status of pixel dimension, pixel aspect, and framerate (as well as codec, though this isn’t as important as the first three) on your source footage.

November 3, 2011 at 3:11 pm in reply to: RE: Premiere Pro CS5 Crash on startup Mac OS 10.8

Have you tried to restart and dump the preferences? That can sometimes become corrupt.

On Windows, you hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift when starting PPro…on a Mac the typical equivalent would be Cmd+Option+Shift I would think, but Todd Kopriva or Kevin Monahan could answer that definitively.

Does it crash whether you launch by double-clicking a project OR if you launch from the application itself (opening a new project)?

If that doesn’t do something…I don’t know how you’ve reinstalled, but uninstalling first is a good way just to clean things up and start fresh…in case something that is corrupt just isn’t being completely over-written.

Upgrading to CS5.5 would help if the preferences for CS5 are shot as CS5.5 will look elsewhere…but that’s a bit like trading in your car when the ashtray is full…

report back on these factors…but any additional details you can think of will be helpful. what were you doing when it last worked? What has been added/subtracted from the system since then? What sort of a project were/are you working on? If you can watch the boot graphic, it will be zipping through some text items as it’s loading (or at least it does on Windows…), if you can see what is the last thing to come up before the app cashes it in…that could be useful.

…and to pile on to Steve’s response…I run McAfee antivirus onall my machines and really don’t run into virus problems. My daughter’s laptop is always an issue, but she ignores my advice about visiting these various pirate TV show websites, which are created by…pirates.

A professional edit workstation shouldn’t double as a personal machine…simple as that. I’ve been using Windows since about the second drop of OSX, and I’ve had very little problem with viruses…in fact I can’t remember having a virus on an editing machine.

Drivers are another issue. Admittedly, with the wide variety of peripherals and component combinations, you can get drivers that conflict or have some weird interaction. However, an edit machine shouldn’t be constantly tweaked and updated once it’s working well either…so it’s a matter of management.

Apple is not immune from updates of one thing that break another thing. In fact, when it happens in Windows, the idea that the hardware, the OS and the application are all made by different companies all working separately is the culprit…when Apple does an OS or QT upgrade that messes up FCP, there really is no excuse is there? Yet it has happened…

I am independent…I’m not an IT guy by any stretch…and I’ve used Windows for nearly a decade. AE render times were one of te deciding factors for me back when I switched as 32 it Windows machines just torched 64 bit Macs…now with everyone on Intel, it comes down to Apple’s willingness to keep up with Intel’s advancements, which I think they’ve been doing more with the iMacs than with the Mac Pros…

If you have a professional integrator build the system, you’ll pay more, but you’ll have that support that you want to have as a security blanket (and it’s something I value as well…I have a 4+ year old system built by BOXX that I can still call for support on and they simply call up the build number and assist me).

The system builders I mentioned in the previous post work similarly, I’m sure.

This concept of “building” a Windows machine is what scares everyone, and frankly it would scare me too. I’ve never built a machine myself, I wouldn’t have a clue what combinations on motherboard, CPU, power supply, etc would be harmonious…professional system integrators have done this homework and that’s why they’ll typically have specific component combinations that they deal with…they know the components, they can support and ‘tweak’ the components to where the system performs properly, the cases they use have been tested for temperature control, etc, etc, etc…

…which are the factors that do raise the purchase price, but that also raise the system’s ability to “just run” everyday…just like a Mac.

As late as last year, I listened to a well-known FCP teacher tell me that students “just don’t get the whole A/B thing in Premiere’s timeline” when the last time he would have seen that would have been prior to 2003…it’s outdated information. Much of the Windows dread that Mac users have is also a product of another era.

It would be like me saying that I can’t use FCP because it doesn’t have audio level meters…that was true in version 1.0, but it has nothing to do with recent reality.

I made the switch from Mac to Windows in 2001-2003. It wasn’t nearly as wacky as I was afraid it would be (and at that time, the speed dividend was substantial)…and Windows 7 is in a different category than Windows 2000 Pro/XP Pro.

You wouldn’t want to waste your time to build your own Mac…why would you build your own Windows machine?

What are the specs for the media vs the spec for the sequence?

I wonder if there is a framesize mismatch?

Are you using an Adobe RED preset sequence?

November 3, 2011 at 4:19 am in reply to: Switching… FCP to PP – Project Manager

Typically the issue with PPro’s project manager will be that it knows what media is used in the project…but any outside projects that created media…like AE and Audition, need to be gathered by hand for archive.

Mac Pros don’t have enough PCIe slots for my system…Fibre Channel, Video I/O, 2 dual-head display cards (4 displays)…I can’t wedge what I need into a Mac. I switched from Macs after a decade of using them through the 90s…

The bottom line is that if you have an established system builder or integrator set up a system…it may even rival the pricing of a similar Mac…but it will also rival its stability in my experience.
