Unfortunately, there’s no way to speed the existing tapes up because of the limitations of the LTFS format. You will need to have written the tapes in an encapsulating, container format (a la BRU) to deal with the data as if it were on a tape instead of a disk. This is another limitation of trying to treat tape like disk.
It’s like the man says, “ya gets what ya pays for.”

Are you using the new Safari under Mavericks and getting the Safari “Power Save Feature” note if you click on the QT question mark? There are a lot of “interesting” new features in Mavericks that probably should have been “left on the currying room floor” so to speak.

BTW – our BRU family is one such group of applications that he mentions that properly manages the tape for file positions within an archive.

Hi George,
I suspect that Finder is getting in your way in this case. When you drag and drop the files from the LTFS volume, Finder sorts and copies those files one at a time. This results in a lot of seeks on the tape as Finder goes after each file separately (the same thing happens with Explorer on Windows).
You can remove some of the seeking (and resulting delays) by copying folders instead of files. But, if you need to select specific files, this is one of the caveats of dealing with LTFS.
If you are familiar with the OS X / Unix command line, you can also reduce the time for restore by using the Unix “cp” command instead of Finder, but that leads to a whole new world of confusion if you’re not familiar with the Terminal.

Can you run the CatDV Desktop app on that same system? You don’t have to leave it installed, it’s just another good test. Also, what does the “Everything” log display? There may be additional messages there to indicate what the failure was that don’t get into the Errors Only log output.
I would start by checking the installation of Java that you are using. In Mavericks, Apple sends you to Oracle, but in 10.7, you should be downloading the JRE 6 package from Apple.

Ooof! I’m now eating crow. I just updated another machine from 10.8.5 to the release or 10.9.0 instead of the Developer Gold Master (GM) as on my rMBP and I can no longer preview MP4, AVI, or WMV files. They work fine with Flip4Mac in FCP X, but not in Finder. It appear to be related to Quicktime, however, since even calling “Open With …” Flip4Mac Player results in an attempt to convert the file and then a failure to display the file.
I’m opening a bug report with Apple on this as that must be something that changed in QT between the GM released to developers and what got posted for download by end users.

Actually, you’re not out of luck. He shared your ticket with me and both of your issues are known (although the circumstances that cause them in some situations and not others are not) – as Mike indicated in your ticket – and both are fixed in the upcoming 3.1.0 release.
Since middle number (3.X.Y) updates are considered minor, all BRU PE 3.x users can upgrade at no cost (we only charge if you’re out of support and the major number changes).
If all goes well with the installer testing tomorrow, we’re aiming for a Wednesday release. I’ll update here when we know.

I know this seems odd, but what setting do you have assign under Safari Preferences -> Security -> Manage Website Settings for Flip4Mac? I know what the warning says, but Telestream recommends setting this to “Allow Always”.
I’ve seen Safari settings interfere with Finder before.

Have you checked the contents of your [VOLUME]/Final Cut Events/[Event Name]/Render Files folder(s)?
