i also understand to send out and convert HD properly you need an AJA or blackmagic capture card. I have the same deck and have been unable to capture cleanly, meaning there have been breaks in TC, camera stoppages and minor gliches cause it to create immense new clips. upwords of 85 for a 10 minute segment.

re-initialize the deck by setting either 50i or 60i, this deck cannot capture 720i in any version(30,50,60)
initialize the deck by changing the setting at the bottom of options to either 60i/50i as
you must ensure that you are capturing with the same codec as was shot with the camera.
set the deck to down convert-off, then switch the output from auto, or DV to HDV, if that is what you want to capture.
turn off the deck, and unplug. replug in.
when hooking up the deck FW make sure you go computer, than deck, to avoid static issues.

and still you may be unable to capture w/out the proper card.
however if all else fails, use imovieHD; hit play on the deck and open it up, and it should initialize witht the proper codec and capture for you.
hope this helps, and if anyone has any info on capture cards, please, throw any info out there in regards to capturing HD.

i think you are going to give more information about your project. Where is its final destination? web? tv? beta? and what type of project is it, HD? DV? DV cam? film? all will yeild different outputs, depending on preference, and version, of software and hardware, possibly.

for the most part, yes you do, as far as i know, no presets…many people set their scratch disks to one location and then within those folders have their capt, render, thumbs, etc. named after their project.

but to keep in a seperate local, you will have to “laboriously” check them out. step one of editing in FCP as i know it.

i have been able to capture in imovie, but not FCP, it seems to be something to do with the a/v setting, they are “missing” in the playback options

July 18, 2007 at 4:41 pm in reply to: Hard Drives vs. MiniDV…Anyone?

From my understanding miniDV has a compression ratio of 4:1 and FCP as 3:1, so if you are going straight from this hard drive to FCP as data, you should have a true 3:1 compression ratio, and even better if you are using AVID. *note i’m not 100% on those ratio’s but are approximate. hope this helps and it seems like the hard drive would be the way to go to me!
