Hey, I’m using the FCP 5 with a GeForce 6600LE video card, and I am not sure if this card is right for capturing HD formats. Final Cut lists “An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors)”
I’m not sure if mine falls into this category or not. what video cards do most with HD workflows use?

That’s not a video capture card. That’s the graphics card to drive your monitor.

If you want to capture uncompressed HD/SD or use a card for converting other formats, then you look at AJA and BlackMagic. I use the AJA Kona series.

so, is it impossible to capture true HD without these cards?

Correct. There are certain formats of HD you can capture without a capture card…HDV, DVCPRO HD, XDCAM…but HDCAM, HDCAM SR, D5 all require an HD capture card.

Oh, and a VERY FAST Raid array of drives. LARGE and fast…for at uncompressed HD sizes, you’ll eat up a lot of space, fast.
