I ran Disc Warrior and some other voodoo, and it appears to be fixed. Thanks anyway, i just wish I knew what caused the problem so i could address it directly if it happens again.

The best advice I could give is , when shooting think like an editor. where is your cutaway, what establishes the location. the most helpful thing you could do for yourself is shoot cutaways that will assist in pacing the end show. when you don’t know the story you must be always thinking on your feet about how every major piece of video can be displayed as an end product. Hard to get used to but it is possible. and as a self taught shooter I say – VOOM IN. i don’t know your video, never seen them. but something that seems consistent among novice and self taught shooters is the always wide angle. video is an intimate medium, don’t be afraid of missing something so much that you are always wide.

February 8, 2009 at 5:11 pm in reply to: wierdness from my kona 3 .?? constant re-seatinghow many lanes does it require, I’ve given it 8 lanes, the card sits in slot 2. As far as I’ve read the card is as it should be. I’ve trouble shot this card up and down and i haven’t discovered a major issue with the installation, but I’m open to it. have i installed it incorrectly?

February 8, 2009 at 4:21 pm in reply to: wierdness from my kona 3 .?? constant re-seatingthe cards in the right spot, if it wasn’t it wouldn’t work perfectly afterwards. I’ve checked the setup, everything is as it should be. i just cannot figure out why i need to re-seat to get the card to capture. it looks like I’ll be calling Aja tomorrow.

Well I will have to say that after cutting on Media 100, Avid, and FCP that FCP is my favorite. I really didn’t think it would be, don’t get me wrong, I loved Avid. I cut a few hundred spots with avid and I’m really glad that i did. The biggest difference that stands out to me technically is user friendliness. FCP beats Avid hands down. The Mojo box is probably the biggest problem i ever encountered. if you were headed to a nitris or composer system i would feel better. the mojo box caused me a lot of problems and made me hate being away from the nitris bay.
Here are the pluses that help push FCP over the top for me when it comes to an editing system.
Lets just say avid and FCP are equally good editors. some of the biggest bonuses with the FCP system involve the “other” programs that come with the studio package. namely Motion, DVD studio Pro, Color, Sound track pro, Compressor, and even Live Type. The add-ons in the package is amazing. It is true that avid does come with some additional software, but 3rd party software doesn’t allow for round trips, or interaction between each other.alright enough said, but one more piece of advice. don’t scrimp, Get a Kona 3 card for capture. it is one of the reasons that i don’t have the problems that I’ve had in the past. It works, and it works well. and if for any reason it’s not working well Aja has hands down some of the best if not the best customer service in the business.

as of right now the U1 drve CANNOT write data to Xdcam diacs. many of us figured this out after purchase. although sony has announced that by the end of summer the firmware upgrade to the U1 will make this possible. this would alow data storage on the Xdcam format, and an archive solution for many of us. I personally don’t care how cheap the little cards become, I don’t trust the longevity of my data on them. As for right now we are stuck archiving to scores of DVD DL or into a raid server.

February 6, 2009 at 12:50 am in reply to: A tricky HDCAM question for the over-clever folk hereI’m just going to consider this “thinking out loud”
Would it be possible to make this a two step playout, the first time record to a 24p setup on HDCAM. this makes the whole 25 -> 24 process and audio a little easier. then you could transfer again from 24 -> 29.97 with the pull down inside the deck. I’m not sure if the audio transfer from 25 to 24 would create the same issues.
Well enough thinking out loud, let us know how you work it out.Thompson
