Sounds good, and can we PLEASE STOP using the word WMV HERE!!! Tom’s campaign again the ultimately useless and old, inefficient codec/wrapper thing continues….

  • That was all a little convoluted, but yes, FireWire 800 will work and it should be fine, I have used it for the past few years as a media “server” of sorts, although I’ve also magically raided it with another drive to male sure I don’t lose anything, because I believe external hard dives are statistically less reliable than sata drives.

Or we could ALL stop using wmv, and tell our clients to use something more sensible. You know, like ANY OTHER FORMAT. sorry I hate wmv, it’s useless and has no point these days…

So what you’re effectively saying is that in conditions such as these, a small amount of gain (eg +3db) may actually HELP the situation- if thats the case then you’re by extension suggesting a possible time to use gain for real broadcast work? (I still dont understand why they build cameras able to use 18db- anything needing that would look TERRIBLE anyway…)

And just to confirm, all the negative gain does is reduce exposure digitally, rather than actually reduce noise as well? (I know it makes it darker, just wondering if there were any other hidden benefits to it…)

Sorry that’s not quite what I meant, I mean if you set up the canvas to display 1920×1080 it DOES pillar box it. I understand the rectangular pixels hdv uses, but why does that not therefore fit into a 1920×1080 canvas?

Sorry im sure I’m probably being thick here but what sort of situation calls formmore than that? I know a few very busy tv editors and I appreciate a lot of transcoding and compressing happens, but normally between dv pal and pro res formats, only to h264 for the last export or 2…

I have an iMac i7 quad core 2.93ghz, 12gb ddr3 1333mhz ram, ATI Radeon HD 5750 1gb- would it make a significant difference still?
