    Ok, so I finally thought of what’s been bugging me. I understand that HDV is basically:
    1} 1920×1080 “squished” as part of its compression to fit onto tape
    2} when captured, it plays back at 1920×1080 through Quick Time
    2} in FCP it says the frame size is 1440×1080

    Right, now obviously 1440 by 1080 is actually a 4:3 resolution, hence why it plays back at 1920×1080 (which is correct 16:9). Now my question is, why then, if you make the canvas size 1920 by 1080 in FCP, does it pillar box the footage?

    Will fill the canvas.
    HDV uses HD pixels.
    1440 x 1080 HD pixels makes the same frame than 1920 x 1080 Squared pixels.

    Sorry that’s not quite what I meant, I mean if you set up the canvas to display 1920×1080 it DOES pillar box it. I understand the rectangular pixels hdv uses, but why does that not therefore fit into a 1920×1080 canvas?

    1440 has a “PAR” – pixel aspect ratio. Meaning that each pixel has a shape, it isn’t square.

    There are several dimensions that are non standard –

    1440×1080 — 1280×1080 which both become 1920 when you multiply them by their respective PARs (1.33 and 1.5)

    960×720 is an anamorphic version of 1280×720 (multiplied by 1.33)

    In standard def, it’s the same way that the same dimensions (720×486 could become 16×9 or 4×3)…you don’t change the NUMBER of pixels, just the SHAPE.

    This always creates an issue when played back in a media player, like Quicktime…because you are trying to interpret non-square pixels…and if that flag isn’t embedded correctly, it won’t play back right. It’s all about knowing what your source is and interpreting it correctly.
