You need to be using a utlity that will “trash” your peferences, but save all of your custom settings.
A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Without more system info from you, I’ll just guess that your HD is either too FULL, too FRAGMENTED or it has some other disk-speed issues.
Restart, de-frag disk, repair permissions, run only FCP app during capture, trash your FCP preferences, wave a dead chicken over your head…

If this is a concern, do NOT use Stereo music and effects and then put the narration and dialogue in the center.
Create a MONO MIX of all the audio and use THAT as your entire track.
THAT way, if the user has some dippy setting selected that screws with the “center channel” (like the one you described)… At least ALL of the audio will be “manipulated” EQUALLY and the whole track can be heard at the same relative level by the user.

Virtually NONE of the consumer set-top DVD recorders will burn a disc with “auto-play.”
They all automatically build a basic menu when you record a disc that can’t be disabled.
There are some older high-end units that will do this (Pioneer comes to mind), but about all of the units that you find at the consumer retailers will only make a menu-controlled (and started) disc.

Was the CAMERA set to 32kHz audio recording?

Although I just add a bit of blur when I scale-down video in FCP.
If you find the right amount of blur, the scaled images look “normal” when reduced.

Just dub the SECTIONS with problems to another tape with new TC.
Then capture those sections from the dub.

There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.
You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs, sync-slippage, or freezes.
NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.
First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:
Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.
You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.
It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.
NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.
