I imagine it can be done with creative use of track mattes and duplciated layers.

Actually, I have gotten the “AVI is not of expected format” before. If you’re getting it from within AE during your render or pre-render, you’ve probably got an unsupported (or semi-supported) AVI codec. Try re-exporting for AE in something a little more standard, like Microsoft DV or Uncompressed. As for the “massive delay,” it’s probably a system resources thing and you’ll just have to live with it.

Just in case anyone else, runs in to this problem, I found that turning off all mental options but motion blur allows Avid 3D to render the piece properly.

Actually, I’m on Xpress HD, but it also happens on my Premiere Pro system and two normal PCs. These are four different copies of Encore. I would think the problem might be caused by some other program that is always running on the computer, but the only common things on all the systems are windows and quicktime. It doesn’t really cause any problems, I just have to control+alt+delete out of it every time. More of a nuisance than a problem.

I actually got it to work (sort of.) On Xpress HD 5.2.4 and AE 6.5.1, you have to install an Avid plug-in for AE called EMP, then find a file in the Avid directories called coreutilis.dll, copy that file into the AE/plug-ins/avid folder, re-boot and a new dialog appears in the preferences drop-down for Avid video preview. Amazing, not only does Avid allow AE to use the hardware, but they give you a roundabout way of doing it.
Now I’m trying it out on a Media Composer with AE 7, but with much more difficulty.Travis Johnson

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

Episode Pro looks really interesting. Is there anything comparable for PC? I mainly need solid QT files for streaming, MPEG elementaries and some Flash. I’ve tried Procoder, Squeeze, Cleaner and Compressor (back in the day on the Macs.)
Thanks

Procoder does create nice Mpegs, but I haven’t noticed a great quality difference between it and Encore. One upside of Procoder is it’s integration with Premiere. You can export elementary streams right off the Premiere timeline that can be authored in Encore with no additional transcoding, saving a render. I, unfortunately, am working on Avid now, so I have to do two renders every time.

ESPN uses Flash video files. As far as I know, only Flash Video Encoder will transcode them well. They are great. Small files, and crystal clear. In my opinion, they are much better than any codec Quicktime or Windows Media has come out with. h.264 is nice and small, but has real trouble being decoded by slow PCs. Flash files seem to playback well on just about anything.

Green will be the easiest color to key, but you might think about the background you’ll add in later. I had a similar experience a few months ago and since we were sure about adding a white-based background, we shot him on white and made a very blurry key. It worked out pretty well.
