Use the place command (Cmd+D) instead of dragging and dropping. This gives you a dialog box. At the bottom there is an option for “Show Import Options”. Check that box. Then you can determine what portions of the pdf are placed (Bounding Box, Art, Crop, Trim, Bleed or Media). Media will give you the entire file size of the pdf.

Here’s a suggestion. Make a new InDy document that is the size of one cartoon. Now you make each cartoon its own page in this document.
In the master “book” document, you then place pages from the cartoon document.
When a new cartoon needs inserted, do it in the cartoon document (as a new page, in its proper placement between the other cartoons). When you open up the master “book” document, refresh the links. The last cartoon will be missing on the last page, but you can now just add that one in there.

Also check to see if when you export to pdf that the “Compatibility” is for Acrobat 5 or higher. With version 4, it will enable the Transparency Flattener (in the Advanced section) which can really adversely affect your document.

Turn on separations preview. (Window>Output>Separations Preview or Shift+F6)
Are the colors now consistent with or without the black signature?

I’ve never seen this happen before but….Are you using a character or paragraph style? Maybe the effect is being applied to the style which is then applied to all other items using the same style.

Wow! You are asking for advice which should cost you hundreds of dollars. Someone is willing to help you out and you won’t spend a few bucks on a phone call?
How do you intend to get all of this equipment that you need? Are you going to start another post asking for free equipment? Hopefully your donated equipment will come with free shipping too.

If this is a professional print house that you are sending your files to, they should be able to give you printer profiles for the different printers and outputs that they use. If not, then you have the potential to have very different contrast and color reproductions.
In addition your monitor may need calibration. If it is out, then what you see on screen will never be what gets printed.
(The super cheap and not at all accurate fix would be to take your printed piece that is “really dark” and hold it next to your monitor. Bring up that piece in Indy and then fiddle with your monitor until you get as close as you can to the printed piece. This will screw up everything else that you view on your monitor – web pages, email, etc…. – but your prints should be quite a bit better.)

A spot color should hold when exported to eps.
I wonder if the swatch is not a spot in Indy. To check, open Window>OutPut>Separations Preview. In the palette that appears, click on view: “separations”. Do you only see CMYK “eyeballs”?

I know that it can be done in Excel. However, I do not know the exact process (don’t have Excel in front of me here).

Is it field inversion?
Maybe try converting to progressive in Compressor while going to .m2vDid you export a QT movie from FCP (self-contained or reference)? Does that movie also give the pulsating?
