Check your memory and multiprocessing settings in AE. Maybe it’s not using as much memory as it should.

When you press the space bar AE starts caching the frames like in RAM preview. When your RAM is filled up AE will start flushing cached frames from the start so it can continue the caching.

Red Giant’s Colorista II is pretty nifty, it’s also 299 dollars. If you have After Effects you probably have the Color Finesse plug in.
These really aren’t QUICK solutions to color correction, but better than the basic 3-way color corrector in Premiere. I personally use the Boris FX 3-way color corrector which is closer to the FCP one.

Have you checked where your work area ends?

Have you upgraded your video card drivers and Premiere? What are your sequence settings? Is the hardware Mercury Playback Engine enabled?

[Michael Smith] So, while it does take longer to render a change, trimming doesn’t affect the time to render and it seems like after effects doesn’t even have a detector for the simple and obvious case of “this frame is gonna be the same for this entire duration, let’s just keep putting the frame into the hard disk from memory/cache/registers and only do that”.
Enable disk caching from the preferences
Also, I still don’t know whether it is possible to enable and disable effects. I guess that it isn’t though, and I really wonder why these shortcomings should even be happening in a program that has thousands of hours of professional coding done on it.

How about making a lens flare or such and wiggling the intensity so it will flicker?
