Good teaser, good effect, would have reduced the frame rate of the modern video to “match” the video of the stock footage, but I liked it.

If you want to render to a DVD and play it using a DVD player, you have to render to Widescreen DVD. This means that you lose quality, since a DVD is lower resolution than HD. If you want to watch it in HD you have to render to HD, but then you (generally) can not burn it to a DVD and watch it in HD on your TV.
There are a few options, you can probably render to HD and watch it by connecting your PC using DVI to your TV. You can also get a blu-ray burner (about $1000 at the moment) and some software to make a blue-ray disk (very expensive) and see it on your TV. Alternatively you can edit it, and transfer the edited video back to your camera and watch it on the TV that way.
Finally, I think there are some DVD players out there that will play HD source video on HD TVs from a regular DVD. Check the DivX website for some details.
In other words, the market is fresh, you need to be creative.

Rendering is generally more of a CPU intensive thing than a memory thing (depending of course on what you are rendering). Keep an eye on how much CPU Vegas is using.

Right-click on the media and see what pops up. Look for a menu item called “Replace…”

If you use YouTube, they will convert it to Flash no matter what file format. The answer depends on what, how, when, who and what weather. The smallest files with the best quality can probably be obtained with either DivX, H.264 or Windows Media. I’d go for H.264 and upload that to YouTube, but that’s just because the weather is nice in Southern California.

What are you rendering as? Uncompressed AVI? If you are rendering to AVI you should render to DV-AVI, which should be somewhere around 12G pr hour. As for the project being broken into 4G portions, there may be a couple of reasons for that, but the main suspect would be your file system being FAT32 rather than NTFS. FAT32 only supports files of 4G size, so Vegas would have to chop the rendered file on those limits.

I don’t think you can compare running it on Vista and running it on 64 bit Windows. Vista contains a lot of new stuff, particularly in the video area, and you may run into subtle problems. I’d characterize Vista as version 1.0, and I’d recommend waiting until the inevitable kinks have been ironed out.
