December 23, 2005 at 12:20 am in reply to: Why is DVCPRO HD 720p24 preset reverting to 59.94?

Thanks for all of the replies floks, but I am curious. If there’s is no cadence info (which I believe there is) recorded to tape by the Varicam in 24p mode, then why should Apple bother even making a preset for it? Additionally, I have been successful at capturing 23.98 fps DVCPRO HD using the 720p24 preset in FCP, but only when I use the CAPTURE NOW button, and during an occasional in/out capture.

I just pulled the full 60 (59.94), which the 720p24 preset reverted to anyway after capturing finished.

I’ ve never had any need for the FRC at all. Since the Varicam will record the appropriate redundant frames in the 60fps space depending on what frame rate shooting mode you are in, it seems that the only benefit of capturing and/or cutting at a different framerate/timebase is to save hard drive space, the possibility of going straight to DVD, or just to be consistent with shooting/ editing frame rates. Either way, when viewing on an NTSC (or HD) monitor or outputting the final product the footage has to be converted to the HD or NTSC frame rate space.

So back to square one – is the FCP DVCPRO HD 720p24 redundant? If there are no cadence bits on the tape, then FCP shouldn’t know what to do with 720p24 footage, but I have actually managed to capture it that way (with inconsistent performance).

I’ll stick to my full 59.94 ingest, but I’d still like to get some of these issues resolved. Maybe it’s time to call Jan Crittenden at Panasonic

    Thanks again everyone.

  • Sorry for the confusion. In my previous post i put FCP 5 and that everything is up to date. I did mean that I have the latest updates for all of the software, so I am at FCP 5.03.

Also, I;ve noticed that several others are having the same issues on this message board with soft or blurry downconversion. This is terribly frustrating to the point of needing to find a temporary alternate solution.

I don’t know what else to do.

  • I was using Final Cut Pro 5, the last version decklink driver released to work with FCP 5, the last version of Quicktime (I guess that would be 7.02), Mac OS 10.4.3.

I hope I am accurate as this is what I can remember.

Now I am using the latest updates for everything:

    QT 7.03
    Mac OS 10.4.3
    FCP 5
    BM driver 5.12

I tried everything you said and it almost works. Help me if I am missing someething. I made the tab markers, but can’t seem to justify text that I highlite left or right of a tab mark. Essentially, most text is centered (such as text with the credit, hard return, then their name), but sometimes I need to have the credit and name go left justified/right justified. Technically all ccredits need to share the same center point. When I maked a tab mark and tried to select text and then justify it left or right, that adjustment was made to all the text. If I can get past this hurdle, then this generator looks like it may do the trick for me. Please advise and thanks for your help.

October 24, 2005 at 7:09 pm in reply to: Image dazzle problems – what are your methods?

Thanks everyone, especially you Kevin. This really helped and cleaned up some of my images. It didn’t work with everything, but using this with a little Gaussian did the trick. Otherwise just modifying my image dpi and res worked.

Rendering the Pan Zppm Pro deflicker parameter now.

I’ve tried that before, but there is no parameter for feathering when I select the mask.

  • Luke this is great news, nut I have some questions after installing the driver.

Here is my config: G5 Dual 2/4 GB RAM/ 250 x2 Internal SATAs/ 3.5 TB Xserve RAID (connected via apple fibre channel card in slot 3)/ ATI Radeon 9600 XT/ ATI Radeon 9200/ Blackmagic Decklink Extreme(Slot 4, PCI-X) /Tiger (MacOS 10.4.2)/ Final Cut Studio/ Apple 23″ HD Cinema Display(connected to Radeon 9600XT)/ Apple 17″ Cinema Display(connected to Radeon 9200)/ Sony 50″ Wega DLP (Connected to Radeon 9600XT)

    – Does the 5.1 software downconvert DVCPRO HD to NTSC in real time?

    – Is the hardware based HD up/down conversion feature greyed out because I don’t have an HD card or because my fibre channel card is in slot 3? (there is a mention about having an HD card in slot 4 (PCI-X) and apple fibre channel card in slot 3 in the Blackmagic READ ME file

    – With the DL Extreme and 5.1 is it at all possible to downconvert DVCPRO HD to NTSC during playback in real time?

    September 8, 2005 at 3:37 pm in reply to: Plug-ins won’t load.

Yes, I have copied them from my own plugins folder to other FCP stations and they all work without installing them. Actually the installation process for all of them is simply to drag them to the correct plugins folder, however for just one machine, FCP will not load them.
