Credits – whats your method(s)?
I can’t seem to find a great way to do credits usually due to to two reasons, differenent font/ text positioning and style within the credit roll and the issue of flickering text. Sometimes I need to have text centered in the frame and then in the same credit roll have text left and right of center (such as for crew/cast and their real names). Here’s what I have tried, but never works great:
– FCP text generator – lacks formatting options
– Live Type – freezes up with lots of credits
– Motion can’t seem to handle lots of text well
– CHV credit roll – Amazing plugin but way too slow (4 hours for 3min of credits on G5 dual 2). Tough if I need to make last minute changes
– Adobe Illustrator – Great sort of, but can’t seem to get rid of the flicker in FCP, and not sure of the best way to save and AI file for use in FCP as a scrolling text image.
– Boris FX text – Lacks formatting features.I could really use some good tested advice on doing credits that can handle varied formatting and style within the same credit roll, as well as doesn’t take forever to render like the CHV plugin. Should I revert to iMovie? I remember in the early days of FCP, many people did their credits there.

You can format many different fonts, sizes, and even create columns in Boris’ title Crawl… should be located in the generator button’s list inside the Boris submenu in FCP 5 or at the bottom of the list in earlier versions. Turn on wrapping in the text entry box, click on the white area at the top to create tabs that are flush left, right or center. Continually clicking on these tabs changes their flush settings.

I tried everything you said and it almost works. Help me if I am missing someething. I made the tab markers, but can’t seem to justify text that I highlite left or right of a tab mark. Essentially, most text is centered (such as text with the credit, hard return, then their name), but sometimes I need to have the credit and name go left justified/right justified. Technically all ccredits need to share the same center point. When I maked a tab mark and tried to select text and then justify it left or right, that adjustment was made to all the text. If I can get past this hurdle, then this generator looks like it may do the trick for me. Please advise and thanks for your help.

don’t rejustify the text at all.. just click several times on the tab marker, it determines justification. An L shapped tab marker would be flush right, a backwards L would be left and an upside down T would be centered… as you click on these tab markers they change.. it’s tricky sort of but you’ll get it… To remove one, just drag it down.
