alrighty, well, after sitting in the drive for about 20 minutes (and being very quiet), the install window opened up and i started to “Install FCS”. then the Installer application “suddenly quit”, so i started over…same thing…restarted, and it’s off and running like a normal install.

makes me feel a little “iffy” about this install. have any of you experienced this?

oh ya…and i forgot to ask anyone – what happened to all the other manuals in Studio 2? there are 4 for FCP, 1 for STP, and none for Motion or DVD SP, though i’m pretty sure DVD SP isn’t changed too much, but i’ve heard Motion 3 is drastically different from Motion 2.

…i am installing Studio 2 as we speak…along with a fresh install of the OS. have you experienced any problems with playback of HD footage that had been captured under Studio 1 and played back in Studio 2?

THAT sounds like a great idea! i just bought the Studio 2 upgrade today as well and have been having a grand ol’ time doing the changeover.

first, i used Carbon Copy to dump my entire system drive to a firewire drive for safety. then i did a “clean install” of OS X to just start with a clean slate. when all the OS software was back in, i tried putting in the first Studio disc…and it never even showed up on the desktop. tried it three times. no appearance…then it hit me that since this was an “upgrade”, it must’ve neeede to find my old Studio 1 on the drive (which obviously wasn’t there anymore). THEN i decided i should read the manual a little : )

the manual said that if the upgrade disc did not detect a previous version on the drive, it would then ask for a serial number. my disc never asked for the SS…so i just decided to do a complete new install of Studio 1, THEN do the upgrade. it’s taking longer, but i suppose when it’s done it will all be as it should be (and now that i’ve read your idea, i’ll be sure to change the name(s) of the old applications so i can run the various versions. very cool! (then i guess i can also dump my safety copy of the old stuff that is now on my firewire drive…

i wasn’t trying to edit them. just want to put them on DVD for archiving and viewing later. you are absolutely correct – they ARE copyrighted, but i also paid for them on iTunes and downloaded them. there should be nothing wrong with putting them on a disc.

ok. so i’ve proved once again the bonehead that i am…

it is working fine…at leas when bringing these “FCP Movie Files” back into FCP without the source file they work fine. they DON’T play as regular QTs on a PC, but no big deal. i’ll have all PC’s purged from the premises the next time our family computer (a PC) dies.

okay, here’s what seems to be happening:

if i choose “Export/QT conversion” in the QT format, it takes an extreme amount of time to even encode a 3-minute clip. in fact, as it renders, the time remaining keeps shooting up to over an hour…so i cancelled that process.

if i choose “Export/QT movie/current settings/self-contained” (the one that seems the mostly likely correct candidate), it renders quickly, but does not play if i “hide” the source file on another disc (as if it had been deleted). but as soon as i reconnect with the source file, this new one plays fine (though it’s defeating the purpose, as i want to get rid of the large source file).
