okay, here’s what seems to be happening:

if i choose “Export/QT conversion” in the QT format, it takes an extreme amount of time to even encode a 3-minute clip. in fact, as it renders, the time remaining keeps shooting up to over an hour…so i cancelled that process.

if i choose “Export/QT movie/current settings/self-contained” (the one that seems the mostly likely correct candidate), it renders quickly, but does not play if i “hide” the source file on another disc (as if it had been deleted). but as soon as i reconnect with the source file, this new one plays fine (though it’s defeating the purpose, as i want to get rid of the large source file).

i also just did a makeshift version of my own using FCP’s Timecode Reader. i cropped the video down so it only showed the minutes and seconds, and then i can move that around to anywhere on the screen. just need to have a fairly long clip, find where it starts at “0:00”, and let ‘er go! it’s quick, easy, free, and resident in FCP…but i’ll give these other options a try as well.

HDV – 720p30 seems to have worked well. all HDV footage has been downloaded, and it jumps across TC breaks almost effortlessly in “capture now” mode (though, unfortunate that it even has so many TC breaks merely due to starting and stopping the camera while shooting!)

still can’t get it to output regular DV footage from mini-DV tapes, though they play fine in the viewfinder. from other people’s posts, it looks like this one really can’t output DV? seems odd…

re: “Make sure you load the easy setup and sequence settings for HDV 30.” just clarifying which flavor. i have these options: HDV – 720p30, DVCPRO HD – 720p30, then several others preceded by “Blackmagic HDTV 720p” and ending with “DVCPRO HD” with various frame rates in between (if that makes any sense).

also, i had no idea about blowing the Firewire port on the camcorder by plugging it into a live Mac. i figured “live” was part of the beauty of Firewire…so i might have blown this one, but i do have two cameras with me, so i’ll power down and try the other one… thanks for your pointers!

still very baffling. i’ve read the JVC manual, with little in there about downloading to a computer. it seems it oughta be pretty straightforward. i’m using a firewire cable from camera to computer, camera is set to VTR mode, tape plays fine in camera viewfinder, but black and no sound on the computer. capture to computer works fine from my Beta deck.

everything checked out alright here…EXCEPT the QT Pro registration. when i went there in the prefs, “Apple Pro Apps User” was in the username box. does this expire after a year or something???
